XKCD STDs #Invitations#geeky weddings#save the date#xkcd Updated Oct 12 2015 (Posted Feb 25 2010) Megan Finley Horowitz meggyfin Okay fellow geeks and nerds, get ready to be super stoked about these XKCD save-the-dates made byJordan! Boomdeyada… "So here's our Save the Date — we're just e-mailing it (my future husband did a great job of figuring out how to get to it to go in the body of the e-mail without coming off as spam). Art is by Randall Munroe of our favorite webcomic XKCD (please please visit www.xkcd.com if you have never done so, he's awesome). I'm super excited!" Ariel and I are big fans of XKCD, and when I showed this to Ariel she pointed out that "of extra geeky importance is that all XKCD comics are Creative Commons licensed — meaning that this is a totally legit appropriation!" Which I did not know, but I'm glad of it because it means that if any of you out there are inspired by this, you too can have some pretty amazing XKCD wedding invites and STDs! Megan Finley Horowitz When Megan's not writing, traveling, and sleeping, she's eating like the fate of the world depends on it. (You're welcome, world!) You can snoop into her personal life over on her website The Dash and Dine! @meggyfin @thedashanddine @meggyfin PREVIOUS Tanith & Darius's laid back, Motor City recession special wedding NEXT My favorite book review Show/Hide comments [ 19 ] Oh my god!!!!!!!!!!! thank you so much for this brilliant idea 😀 Reply love it!! we considered using xkcd, but decided too many people (mostly family) wouldn't get it. and thanks for pointing out that it's all CC-licensed – i didn't know that, but it doesn't surprise me. =) xkcd is awesome! Reply I'm having the same problem with a lot of people not getting any reference I have to the game Portal. Reply Yes, I would reeeaaalllllyyyy like to stress how important that Creative Commons license is. Many webcomic artists support themselves solely from their comics and would be terribly offended/disheartened if they were used without permission. Randall Munroe's work is the exception, not the rule. That being said, yaaaaaaaay XKCD! Reply Amen to this, Caitlin. Megan actually emailed me a few weeks ago with an invitation design she'd seen on the OBT, asking if I wanted to feature it … and it was immediately clear that the invite featured art lifted from the internet without permission. As a writer, I'm just not cool with the idea of fellow creatives' work being used without proper permissions … so I nixed the post. And was SUPER excited to feature this invitation instead! 🙂 Reply <3 xkcd! We didn't use it for the STDs, but it's what I used for my proposal to my boy. 😀 Reply AW, please share your story! 🙂 Reply That is freaking awesome! Brilliant idea!:D Reply eee!! These are awesome! <3 FH and I are making our own XKCD invites, and our cake will also be featuring XKCD. Reply Love it! Though to be truly in the spirit of xkcd, I think some alt-text is in needed (does that even show up on email though? hmm…) Reply I'm thinking the STD abbreviation might not be the best… just sayings all. Reply Jeremy, welcome to the most beloved joke of the wedding industry. We all use STD, and we all snicker about it. Reply I really hope that both STD and BM for bridesmaids are used tongue in cheek-if they are, it just may restore my faith in humanity. I just read a whole conversation at WeddingBee about BM dresses. Reply Love the geekiness! XKCD rules. Reply super geeky coolness! Reply To any and all Seattleite XKCD fans: Shoot me a message over on the OBT if you want an XKCD-inspired ballpit experience. The future husband built one in the living room as part of his attempts to woo me (it worked!). I think we've had 6 fully grown adults in it before… 🙂 Reply Kate, this is SO COOL. If we ever make it to Seattle I am so totally taking you up on that. I tried to find you on OBT, but there are 5 pages of Kates… 🙁 Reply I LOVE This!!! Reply http://home.comcast.net/~angie711/wedding/SaveTheDates.html these are the STDs i've put together for our event. i was so excited the first time i saw this post on obb that i jumped on firefox and opened illustrator with a vengeance! when i finished, i showed this to my FH, and it was the first thing he got excited about! i told him to pick one, and he surprised me by asking, "One? Can't we use them all??" eeeeeeee! best part is… HE introduced me to xkcd when we first started dating! Reply Join the conversation Cancel ReplyYour email address will not be published.
