Kari and Chris had to do some serious leg-work to find a caterer willing to accommodate their request for their reception dinner: Mexican-inspired vegan cuisine. One contender even told them that they considered vegan Mexican an oxymoron! And this was on top of some major guest skepticism about an all-vegan menu. Thankfully, Philadelphia-based caterer Dine My Darling stepped up to help them craft a drool-worthy menu for their Philly nuptials including sweet potato tacos, pumpkin soup shots, and roasted vegetable empanadas.     Also, seriously? an oxymoron? I eat vegan Mexican food like 3 times a week…

    And I can say that sweet potato tacos are likely the most delicious food in the world. I want to eat this whole wedding.

    • Yea, I’ve never had vegan Mexican food, but I’ve seen it available at so many places. I feel like food from other countries is easier to translate into vegan/vegetarian diets. You just need to find a flexible and willing caterer.

  2. I must comment! I got married 1 week ago and we had a gluten free-vegan mexican taco buffet at our wedding in NC! We had a similar menu but had tofu/quinoa spiced tacos (I have celiac disease and cannot have seitan).

  3. OMG YUM!!! I wish we could have gone full vegan just for the challenge of it but FH would probably kill me! Kudos to this couple for sticking to their guns and finding someone who could totally rock the Mexican vegan noms!

    We had a vegetarian brunch plus crepe truck and yeah, no one even noticed! Later, when I said things like “See, you can totally do a vegetarian menu at a wedding” (my family is Polish=meat loving culture) people were like “Whaaat? Your food was vegetarian???” Ha!

  7. This is the only wedding food I’ve seen that could make us (almost) regret the vegan Thai food from our wedding. Looks awesome!!!!!! (Those cookies are so cool!!!)

  9. Yes! Vegan menus all the way! Those tacos sound aMAZing!

    We’re having a more traditional sit-down three course meal, with choices for each course – all vegan. Starters are easy enough: anyone can make vegan soup or put out some pitta bread and hummus! For the mains we wanted to offer a wider selection: curry and rice (which can be made so many different ways!), a burger made from chickpeas, and a cottage pie, along with salad, potatoes and vegetables for everyone.

    We’re hiring professional caterers and no they don’t specialise in vegan food. Practically anything, wedding menu or otherwise, can be vegan. The sheer possibilities are so limitless, it’s hard to narrow it down to just a few choices! (On the day I’ll probably be trying to try bits from other people’s plates – how am I supposed to choose between chocolate mousse and cheesecake?!)

    If anyone’s considering a vegan menu I’d say go for it. You don’t have to compromise on taste and variety, and whether you’re having an informal buffet or one of those banquets where you get more cutlery than you have limbs you can find something suitable. It’s often cheaper too, although of course it depends on what you choose and what you compare it to.

    If you’re worried about what people will think, remember you can’t please everyone no matter what you choose and you are likely to get even more satisfied guests with a thoughtful and delicious vegan menu than with a standard “boring, traditional” menu.
