dssd alternative wedding ideas from Offbeat Wed (formerly Offbeat Bride)

A Nigerian-American carnival themed wedding (with Six Flags post-party!)

John and I love theme parks, especially Disney World, so I had the idea to have a carnival themed wedding. I initially wanted to incorporate carnival rides, but given our guest list size (about 250 people invited), we had to be more space conscious, so we opted for a wedding weekend that included a trip to the area theme park (Six Flags) in our wedding attire.

Find your favorite fandom in this sci-fi and fantasy wedding in Maryland

After nearly a decade together, Judy and Phil tied the knot at their alma mater of St. Mary’s College of Maryland. The two originally couldn’t decide on a theme, but man did they pick a good one in the end. They love a ton of fantasy/science fiction franchises, so it only made sense to call upon the powers of The One Ring, The Force, and The Ministry of Magic to get the job done. Just wait until you see their fandom-themed centerpieces and references to pop culture touchstones everywhere. Oh, and when elf ears are involved, I’m so in. Let’s see all the magic unfold…

Queer black Baltimore realness: a drag king and a burlesque performer get married

Queer black Baltimore realness: a drag king and a burlesque performer get married

“Chris is an award-winning drag king and Sydney is a burlesque performer. Needless to say, this means our wedding was very theatrical.” The dress code was “not basic,” and they saw outfits ranging from sequin cocktail dresses to leprechaun costumes, to drag, to ALF. They walked down the aisle, catwalk-style, to a gay dance club classic, “Din Daa Daa” by George Kranz. Sydney's 35-year old brother was the ring bearer and her 98-year old grandmother made it rain with a Cash Cannon as the "flower girl." Y’all NEED to see this amazing queer black Baltimore spectacle!

Pizza - An April Fool's Day surprise pizza parlor wedding

An April Fool’s Day surprise pizza parlor wedding

Nicole and Ken had their second date at Pi Pizzeria in St. Louis several years ago. When they decided to get married and found out there was a location close to where they live in the DC area, they decided to surprise their close friends by getting married at what their friends expected to be an engagement party.

Add in their classy “Best Day Ever” cake, funky decor at the restaurant, and requisite rings-on-pizza-slice shot, and you’ve got a deliciously fab tiny wedding…

High fantasy meets a handmade gown at this treehouse camp wedding

High fantasy meets a handmade gown at this treehouse camp wedding

Tierra and Bradley got married at The Treehouse Camp at Maple Tree Campground, a Maryland venue with an ACTUAL HOBBIT HOLE. The guests came in fabulous garb, but nothing compares to the bride’s gown that she designed her damn self. She bought the amazing corset and then crafted the leaf-adorned tulle skirt to match. Bradley channeled hobbits with this outfit and acorn boutonniere. Plus, there was a hooded cloak involved which we very much dig. Don’t miss the hawk delivering the rings!

Be enthralled by this family focused wedding with a stunning mohawk

Terri and Vince met and dated when they were younger, and then went their separate ways, only to meet up after several years and fall in love again. This was a second marriage for both Terri and Vince, and they made it a family focused celebration by incorporating their children into all aspects of the day. You’ll definitely want to catch Terri’s killer mohawk and earrings, their flower seed favors, gorgeous ruffle cake, and tearful ceremony.
