Prom dresses make daring wedding gowns

Updated May 21 2021

I'm all for white dresses, red dresses, blue dresses, purple dresses, but ZOMG I actually gasped out loud when I saw this picture of Kelly Devoto's fantastical colorful peacock-y wedding dress — which it turns out was actually designed to be a prom dress.

Seriously, it's like a My Little Pony and Tinkerbell totally got it on nasty-style in a magical rhinestone shop and this dress was their sparkling bastard love child. And I mean that in the very best possible way! I'm totally in love.

I've got a detail shot of the bodice and bouquet below, along with the bride's story of where she got the dress.

Kelly says:

Kelly Devoto (2)I got my dress in downtown Los Angeles at this huge dress shop called "Trendy Too" (lol). They sell dresses primarily for quinceaneras and proms. The brand is Mori Lee, and my dress was part of the 2007 prom collection. They only had one of that particular dress at good old Trendy Too, it was way too big for me — but luckily my grandma is an amazing seamstress and worked her magic on it.

This was the first and only dress I tried on. I just knew it was THE ONE!! The dress was the first thing I got for my wedding (besides the groom, of course) so once I had that, I picked out all the decorations to match the 3 colors of the dress: bright purple, electric blue, and honeydew melon green.

[related-post]So, the secret to a colorful, fanciful, totally over-the-top wedding gown? PROM DRESSES! Folks who've read my book know that I'm biased toward prom dresses: the bright green skirt overlay from my wedding dress was made from an old prom dress I bought on eBay.

Here are a couple more shots of Kelly in her dress:

  1. A few of the dresses I'm considering have definitely come from prom sites… I'm not ashamed! I gasped upon seeing this picture as well. Stunning.

    • I got my 2 wedding dresses, and both of them were prom/pageant gowns. I got 2 dresses for under $1,000. The price point is unbelievable! And plus you can find a dress more reflective of your style. A number of these dresses also come in white, creams–more traditional "wedding" colors!

  2. i loooove this dress, but more than anything i love what you wrote about it:

"Seriously, it’s like a My Little Pony and Tinkerbell totally got it on nasty-style in a magical rhinestone shop…" hahahahaha you rock just as much as that dress does

  3. I don't know why, but I friggin' LOVE THIS DRESS. Totally not my style, but at first glace I was all ZOMG, just like Ariel. I wish I were this brave! 🙂 Beautiful, beautiful gown!

  4. Oh my goodness! I love it…I am so jealous! I wish I was that daring but I'm too chicken to try something like that…but it's amazing!

  5. One of my Barbie dolls has a dress like that. I am all kinds of jealous. I also gasped when I saw this pic! Stunning, gorgeous, wow!

  6. this is a celebration all wrapped up in one dress! Faerie queens would love it. congratulations Kelly – on finding your perfect dress, having your day your own perfect way, and on your, hopefully long and wonderful, marriage !

  7. Woooowww… this dress is fantasy incarnate. Ariel gets a rhinestone-encrusted gold star for her genealogical take on it.

This is SO not my style, but at the same time, it is the kind of dress that you wanted to dress your Barbie dolls up in, just for the colourshock that would ensue. I totally second laura who said "I wish I was that brave!"

  8. "Seriously, it’s like a My Little Pony and Tinkerbell totally got it on nasty-style in a magical rhinestone shop and this dress was their sparkling bastard love child."

That's hilarious…Ariel, you are so clever…what goes in that mind of yours! I love it.

  9. I LOVE TRENDY TOOOO! That is where I get my recital dresses! They have the biggest and best selection! Love the bouquet too!

  10. I'm not a princessy kind of girl but when I saw this gown my jaw dropped, I absolutely LOVE this, it's gorgeous and so is the bride!

  11. I never get tired of seeing this dress! If I'd seen it a few months earlier, I might not have made mine!

  12. Onibunny I love love love your suggestion… I have been looking for a dress like that. too bad it's out of my budget range

  13. Oh wow.
That dress is exactly what I wanted!!
Unfortunately Mother took over and said that grandparents would have heart attacks… dammit.
    But it is sooooo gorgeous!!

  14. I LOVE this! It tugs at my 16-year-old inner self and screams "I AM WHAT YOU WANT"!!

Of course, I already bought a damn dress, but if I hadn't? This is the road I would take.

  15. i love the dress. it's the same thing i'm doing in my wedding.
but mine isn't as wonderful as
this dress. mine is a old red prom dress. its perfect for my december

  16. I simply love it..
Lets do away with the conventional and be bold and try something different !

I wish I could find more brides who thinks like this

  17. i am in love with that dress!!!!! i really want to wear it to prom! thats what i was searching for when i found this. i'm serious where can i find this dress?

  18. Thanks for putting this up.

It made me think I could pull off
the colorful dress I want badly to be married in that everyone tells me not to.

    I probably wouldn't have if I didn't see this.

(sorry if that didn't make sense)

  19. I've stumbled upon this page quite a few times but I've never commented… I don't plan on getting married (ever) but if did I've rock out with my vadge out in something similar to this.

  20. the dress is so cute!! My wedding dress is a prom dress too. I love it its cream ruffly beautifulness and only $125. yeah lol I look like and adorable cupcake lol

  21. I abosultley ADORE this dress !!
Oh My God i would do anything for it,
unfortunatley its too BIG for my prom wich is in 4 years time and cant bloody wait !!,
