Alex and Mick's Friday the 13th wedding featured some of the most amazing details we've seen: a hand-painted antler headpiece, Mick's killer hot pink suit, handmade rings (that they made!), and an after party at some pubs. This is a wedding I can only wish I attended. Here's a little from the couple themselves including MAJOR surprises at both the ceremony and reception…

We really wanted our day to be about us. We back and forthed for ages about having an identifiable theme, having everything matchy-matchy and complimentary, but ultimately what we ended up doing was pulling together all the things that we love together and about each other. I suppose it ended up a bit whimsical, a bit rock ’n’ roll, a bit hodge-podge, and very laid back, but that’s us!

Here are some details about the ceremony. Get a hanky!

Our love is cosy and intimate and a little bit goofy, so our ceremony had to capture that for us. We chose the medieval hall to bring everyone together in one space, surrounded the windows with natural fauna, and lined the aisle with great big pumpkins that we’d spent weeks painting in white chalk paint and gold foiling for a bit of glitz.

Originally the plan was for Mick to play me down the aisle with an acoustic version of “Everlasting Light” by the Black Keys on his guitar, which no one but myself and certain members of the bridal party knew about. He blew every single one of us away when he started singing acapella-style and left very few dry eyes in the place. Afterwards he confessed to me his hands were shaking too badly to play!

Our two dogs naturally had to be there; our boy Gatsby with Mick’s groomsmen, and my old girl Skylar walked ahead of me as one of my bridesmaids. It felt amazing to have everyone there who meant something to us and had been part of our lives, but I couldn’t peel my eyes off of Mick nor he me. We’ve both said it was like realising we were in love for the first time all over again. Without even thinking, we kissed as we greeted each other and it was impossible not to steal a couple of cheeky pecks between the vows we had chosen.

For our first proper date, Mick had taken me for afternoon tea as I’d never done it before and it continues to be our favourite way to spend time together. For us, the idea of doing anything else for our reception just didn’t cross our minds.

There were more painted pumpkins up the stairs to the Georgian room and all over the tables were some mini ones and a few retro puzzles and games to keep the younger ones entertained. One of the main things we loved about the venue was its own charm and personality so there really wasn’t anything we needed to do to gussy it up.

There was an extra air of excitement for us as Mick and I were finally able to tell everyone that I was expecting our first baby after trying for nearly three years. A fresh wave of cheers and congratulations went round and even the dogs joined in with a chorus of howling.
