  1. I loooooooove the aesthetics here, loved that they had a model who looks to be a person of color. It is interesting to see the trend in styled shoots to have just a bride, rather than depicting a couple. Weddings are still very bride-centric (I think the current trend of very pastel, floral, pink wedding decor is an example of this, not that there’s not men who are into that, but it does play in to traditional feminine aesthetics), and do tend to treat the groom/less feminine partner as an add-on. I wonder what it would look like to have an actually couple-focused wedding industry or marketing. Maybe more things would be branded as working for both of you? More themes built around a more balanced aesthetic?

The team who put this together did a great job! Just prompted some thoughts on my part.

    • Hi Eyema! I’m the photographer for this shoot– I love your thought provoking comment as I’ve totally thought the same thing before! It seems almost as if grooms are just looked at as “arm candy” or as you put it “add on’s”– I’ve even heard other photographers say to mainly focus on the bride on a wedding day and I think that is SO… off kilter? We actually were trying to pull together a groom look to go along with this that didn’t end up happening because it was put together fairly late and we didn’t have the time to make the perfect look. BUT…. if you can imagine with me here for a sec, we were drawing up inspiration for a pirate esque “groom”– ahh!! With a long stylish satin waistcoat adorned in buttons and a few frills and gorgeous trim. Unfortunately we wern’t able to find something to like that to pull off the perfect look in time 🙁 So we just nix’d the groom look since we felt we couldn’t fully pull it together properly, and instead decided to focus on aesthetics of color, texture, and vibes with 1 model 🙂

      • I would love to see a groom-centric styled shoot, in any theme! It’s been hard for my Fiance to find offbeat things that are more catered to him. It seems like mostly the fancy styled shoots like this are all about the ladies wear, and the guys get the same stuff. Basic suits, basic tux, maybe something with a little more color, but that is all.

      • Hi! I’m a bride-to-be and my fiancé and I want to go for a subtle elvish/medieval look for our wedding. It’s indeed a bit depressing that there’s soooo much inspiration for the bride, but not for grooms. Especially on Pinterest, if you type in “elvish groom”, you only get a handful of pictures with a groom in it!

Back on topic: This shoot is absolutely gorgeous! 😀 Congrats to you, the photographer, the gorgeous model and everyone involved into the styling! 🙂

      • Cool!!!

I would LOVE to read an article about the behind the scenes of how wedding industry people make decisions about and put together styled shoots like this. Like, how do you balance out wanting to represent more PoC in the wedding world with maybe not having any money to pay a model for their work? What % of the materials for a shoot are bought, borrowed, stolen? Do these kinds of things actually generate revenue for the photographer, or is it more to have awesome shots in a portfolio, and how do you seperate out whether having awesome shots on your website actually generates revenue?

All to say that I’ve seen a lot more styled wedding shoots in the last couple years and as a consumer I’m so curious about what they’re FOR.

        Julie, you should write it!

  2. Everything is gorgeous, but for me the jewellery and headdress is to die for. So original and quirky.

My favourite shot of the bride, is with the fish net, that really sets everything off wonderfully. One of the most originally executed themed weddings I’ve seen.
