Location & date of wedding: Backyard of Spring Park Center, Texas — March 21, 2009
What made our wedding offbeat: I wanted a comfortable, outdoor wedding during my favorite time of the year, Spring. We had the traditional elements with a preacher, bridal party, the white dress, the bouquet/garter toss, broom jumping, etc. I also wanted some classic hip-hop playing for the reception. With that, I had breakdancers performing at our reception, thanks to a wedding I had seen featured in OBB.
Our biggest challenge: With a spring themed wedding, I was ready to have flowers galore! But I had no idea that a real bouquet would cost so much. So I turned to Ebay and found a few sellers that made luscious silk arrangements for the entire bridal party for a fraction of the price of real flowers.
We also had to scramble to create “flower baskets” for my flower girls since I had left the store-bought stuff at home. One of my bridesmaids grabbed some tissue paper from our goody bags, some plastic cups, and a few stray silk flower buds. They made for the ugliest, but the most charming baskets. HAHA I was very thankful for her help and that memory.
My favorite moment: There were a few people in my family with well known problems going on in their lives. They could have just stayed home, or came to the wedding with a “dark cloud” hanging over them.
I was happy to see them not only make it to my wedding, but to be in great spirits and health with smiles on their faces and enjoying the fresh air. That made me more happy than anything.
My advice for other offbeat brides: Try not to listen to anyone that suggest “No Ring, No Bring” when it comes to the guest list. I know that some situations are different than others, but let the single people bring someone if it's going to make them feel more comfortable. The guest count to food ratio will always work itself out in the end.
One more thing; do not waste your time with a seating chart and don't feel obligated to have a head table or a “sweetheart table.” We were just fine sitting amongst friends. However, do put on your comfortable shoes and visit EVERY table.
