Our offbeat wedding at a glance:
We went for a slightly gothic, slightly rock and roll theme to our goth garden wedding. We picked vendors who had a bit of a quirk and fit with the aesthetic we were going for. Neither Aubrey nor I are super traditional, so it made sense for our wedding to be as quirky as we are.
Tell us about the ceremony:
My bridesmaids and I had quite a long walk from where we got ready down to where we were having the ceremony, so we had two songs to walk down the aisle to. The bridesmaids walked down to "Somewhere only we know" by Lily Allen, carrying their blue glass lanterns, whilst I walked down the aisle to "Rumble" by Link Wray.
We kept with some traditions such as my father walking me down the aisle and the exchange of rings, as well as Aubrey not seeing me until I walked down the aisle. It was quite a special moment as my dress had been a well-kept secret for about 12 months.
Tell us about your reception:
We had a cocktail reception at Midwood Cottage, which has quite rustic decor with wine barrels scattered around the property as well as rustic tables where we set up our wedding favours, card box/wishing well, etc. Our caterers did such an amazing job at keeping everyone well fed, and our wedding cake was amazing. The funniest moment had to be when Aubrey carried the cake up to the house for it to be cut and almost dropped it!
What was your most important lesson learned?
One of the biggest challenges we had early on in our wedding planning was that we tried to please everyone and take on everyone's advice. My best advice is to concentrate on what you and your partner want. Do not be afraid to tell people no when you are wedding planning. We could have saved ourselves a lot of stress by being more liberal with our application of the word “no.”
