Our offbeat wedding at a glance:

Our wedding was a blend of a whole lot of fall, Halloween, goth, Tim Burton-like elements that all worked together in a surprisingly elegant way. We incorporated as much of our ancestral history as we could. We had photos of our passed relatives at both the ceremony and our reception. I wore the bracelet of Daniel's grandmother, I slipped her wedding ring onto my handkerchief, and I read my vows from a bound volume of the poetry written by Daniel's grandfather. It was important to us to share our roots with each other and our families and friends as we became one.

Tell us about the ceremony:

Our ceremony is overflowing with creativity. In my line of work, I am deeply invested in aesthetic and branding. I think once all of the elements were working together on the day of our wedding, that all our wild ideas presented beautifully. For our wedding programs, we printed black lunch bags with our ceremony information and our wedding guests were invited to fill them up at our Trick or Treat table after the ceremony. We had lots of candy and popcorn we purchased from a local merchant. Huge hit with the kids!

The music included a few unique gems as well. The song I chose for my processional was performed and recorded by Dan. He played every instrument on the track from the ukulele, to the drums, guitar, bass, and piano and layered them all to create an acoustic version of Death Cab for Cutie's, “I Will Follow You Into the Dark.” Our recessional song was “Christmas Island” which plays at the end credits of a cartoon that Dan and I are both crazy for, Adventure Time.

Our first reading was performed by our good friend, Chris. We had asked him to do the “mawwage” speech from The Princess Bride. We had no idea until he came running down the aisle that he also dressed the part! Everyone was dying laughing, which was perfect because we were all so emotional from the family blessing that began our wedding. Once we all settled down, our officiant, Jitterbug, got the ceremony going again with a reading by Bell Hooks.

Tell us about your reception:

Our reception was at the Red Herring Lounge in Duluth, MN. It was perfectly perfect in every way for us.

What was your most important lesson learned?

My biggest challenge to planning this wedding was meeting in the middle of my tendency to overthink and over-plan every detail and Dan's general demeanor of, “it'll all work out.” I had to learn to step back and let Dan step in. It was a cool dance we did to make this beautiful day happen. Not without a few breakdowns!

Now that I'm on “the other side” I would recommend getting a best friend like mine. Becky was instrumental in keeping me sane, on track, and validating all of my fears and hopes. I truly could not have done it without her.
