The Offbeat Bride: Jasmine, Supply Chain Manager, Owner of TatteredPixie

Her offbeat partner: Cody, Elementary PE Teacher

Date and location of wedding: Circle S Ranch in Lawrence, KS — November 5, 2016

Our offbeat wedding at a glance:

Both of us are non-religious and not too fond of being the center of attention, so we never really intended on getting married, let alone having a wedding. My daughters and our families talked us into it… and we are extremely overjoyed that they did!

Instead of having one set theme, our wedding was a mash-up of everything we love. We DIYed almost everything and tried to keep it more about fun, entertainment, and family, instead of just about us. Getting ready, the groomsmen shot arrows at hay bales while the bridemaids played with how to wear their custom fairy dresses made by me. There were hula hoops at the cocktail hour, dancing down the aisle at the ceremony, and the reception included a sword fight, impromptu “Lord of the Dance” performance, and a birthday celebration.

Tell us about the ceremony:

After trying for months to think of “perfect” wedding songs to walk to, we ultimately chose two of our favorite songs, regardless of if they sounded good together or not. Our bridal party danced down the aisle to “Ho Hey” by the Lumineers and I walked to “Crystalize” by Lindsey Sterling, arm linked with my mother and father on each side.

My uncle officiated the wedding and read an incredibly touching, comical speech he wrote after interviewing us separately. We then read the vows we wrote for each other. It was important for us to have our girls be more involved than just flower girls. So before we exchanged rings, Cody presented them with necklaces. We shared a kiss and walked away to “Home” by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros.

Tell us about your reception:

We chose dried flowers for decor to be included in the bouquets, centerpieces, and altar decorations. This allowed me and the bridesmaids to put everything together ahead of time and also ended up preventing tons of stress and saved us crazy amounts of money. We created simple centerpieces with the flowers attached to random brass and copper findings from local antique stores with mini lace tablecloths, Mason jars, and old books. We included deer skulls in the arbor and head table decorations that Cody's grandpa had found. My mother made a delicious dipping oil with spices for our wedding favors.

Near the end of our chicken enchilada dinner, a sword fight broke out among two guests squabbling over whether we had to have a first dance or not. The victor of the sword fight announced the first dance would include… EVERYONE! Cody then danced a traditional mother/son dance. Then an awkward, drunken, hilarious Riverdance type thing happened between me and my father, which he told me he was planning just hours before the wedding.

Before cutting the cake, we brought our grammys, who have birthdays on November 6th and November 7th, up to present them with mini cakes and have all of our guests sing happy birthday to them.

Dancing, cigar smoking, interesting conversation, and partying went well into the night.

  1. This is the best unintentional ‘Firefly’ wedding I’ve ever seen. <3

  2. Oh so magical. It looked relaxed, woodsy, different …LOVED IT!
Meanwhile, was it the groom doing archery in the 4th picture? The jeans, the shirt, the bow and arrow, the stance – ALL GOOD! 😉
