Our offbeat wedding at a glance:

The initial concept was "what if David Lynch was to film the ballroom scene from the Addams Family movie and the only cinematographer available was Xavier Pérez Grobet (Nacho Libre)?"

Tell us about the ceremony:

Guests were greeted by tuxedo-ed ushers on stilts and swiftly escorted to the bar. For early entertainment, we had an aerialist performing her hoop act accompanied by selections of songs from all the Lynch films and a lighting scheme based around reds and blues to accent the black and white decor.

In attendance were esteemed guests such as Duff-Man, Mr. Confetti, members of Cirque Macabre, and Mr. Peanut. Upon announcement from the ring leader, our bridal party arrived in rose red gowns for the girls and blue velvet tuxedos for guys. Our flower girl (dressed as a flower with a head piece) and Ring Bear (not a misprint) came down the stairs to be followed by me (the groom) in black velvet tuxedo and handmade ribbon (we are huggers so flowers tend to get crushed).

Next came the most beautiful bride in a vintage-inspired tea length dress (refer to end scene of Gentleman Prefer Blondes) and hair immaculate under a vintage veil. It was the first and only time I have ever seen a standing ovation with roaring applause/shouts/hollers/whistles for a bride coming down the aisle. Instant tears.

She magically worked “Forever in Blue Jeans” lyrics into her vows. Too nervous and hating what I had written, I dramatically tore my notes up in front of the whole audience and just winged it to moderate success. Tears and a passionate kiss were shared and deals were sealed. With the lights cut to a red-only scheme, we excited up the stairs to the wonderful Alex Pickle singing "In Heaven" (Eraserhead) with ukulele accompaniment.

Tell us about your reception:

After the photos were taken, we arrived back at the venue. A small box was wheeled into the center of the waiting crowd. Endora (flower girl) knocked on the too small box and out came Ms. Kelly the contortionist to announce us (who had secreted back in and at the top of the stairs). A huge line was formed to greet us and many hugs were shared. Food and the rest of the liquor was quickly depleted, cake was cut (complete with glass terrarium as a layer), we were made a Lord and Lady of Ireland (best wedding present ever), toasts were made and dances were danced.

A post-reception highlight was to be greeted at the Fairmont Olympic Hotel with cheering/applause from the staff and unaware hotel guests for a quick snack, then off to Soul Night at the Lo-Fi lounge to end the evening.

What was your most important lesson learned?

The challenge was too many good ideas and the brutality of editing. After that, just know that approx. 70% of what you plan will happen and the other 30% will fall by the wayside on the day of the wedding. I tried to alleviate this with as much planning, detailing, sketching, and run-through, but fate isn't always the biggest fan of weddings. This was my gift to my new bride and at the end of it all, if she was smiling and happy, then I did my job.

  1. WOW. I LOVE that HE did all this for her. And just … wow. Love it. SO many amazing and wonderful details. Splendid and highly unique.

  2. Just wanted to add a few others that helped make what was bouncing around my head into a living, breathing thing…
Ms. Carly Slater – Now this woman had the most brutal of tasks. Taking a OCD riddled mad-mans scrawled notebook imbued with copious amounts of libations and far too minute details and turning it into a proper ceremony. Ms. Amy Snyder – Not only provided all the roses and floral accessories, but also set them all up the day of the wedding.
Mrs. Liz Morelle – This beautiful person stepped in last freakin’ minute and went from the role of MC to improv. officiant in less than an hour and nailed it.
Ms. Alex Mene – Singer of Great Grandpa and one of the most enchanting of voices I know.
Ms. Kelly Marie Ward – Not only was she suspended from the ceiling, but when she was done with that, we stuffed her in a tiny little box.
Mr. Tristan Clark and Ms. Virginia Prism – They towered over the audience and the unexpected dancing had me over the moon.
Lastly but NOT leastly Ms. Tory Graf and Mr. Allan Waite – These two ran their butts off and made all the little details happen. A must have and true friends.

  3. Holy crap, your wedding is amazing!!!! This is the best! That was one hell of a specific theme and I love it. I think I went “awwwww” at least half a dozen times reading this article. You’re so clearly in love with your bride that it just poured through the page. Very sweet! You did a fantastic job! I hope you both thoroughly enjoyed your day. And I’m so glad you wrote this. You don’t often see the grooms write the articles. There should be more of that.

  4. I had the pleasure of attending this fantastic beautiful wedding last year. It is the best wedding I have ever attended. It was fun and full of love and happiness. This is a very special couple.
I am their Aunt but not partial. LOL

  5. Your wedding is lovely and amazing! It seems to showcase you both very well and is visually stunning. Your bride is absolutely gorgeous and the love between you just shines! What you did came together so well and I wish I could have attended, just to share in your joy! 🙂

  6. Such an amazing wedding idea. I love every detail. And the photographer did an amazing work. We need such weddings in germany, too.
Would really, really love to create such an event, too.

  7. What a spectacular wedding! So many ideas I want to adapt for mine ~beginning with those gorgeous invites that do such a magnificent job of setting the scene. I wonder if you could tell me where/how you had them made?

    • Krystin, they were a labor of love. See what I did there?!?! I.Am.Hilarious!

We actually made them ourselves. Mickey designed them himself. Mickey is also a photographer so he set up the shoot (planned the lighting scheme and backdrop), painted the hula hoops, hung them from the ceiling, framed the shot and had a friend push the button thinger and edited the photo, we worked on the wording together, had everything printed on fancy paper at FedEx/Kinkos, cut the three piece inserts, hand glued the center piece, used photo corner holder thingers (8 per invitation) for the two side pieces and hand folded each one. I actually enjoyed the crafty side of it, but it was a lot of work.

    • The underlying subtext of this is that I seem to have control issues.
