Alexzandra & Kevin's "Afrolian" Punk Rock Wedding

April 23 2009 | offbeatbride

The Offbeat Bride: Alexzandra, Personal Assistant

My Offbeat Partner: Kevin, teacher

Location & date of wedding: Glessner House Museum in Chicago, IL — 08/09/08

What made our wedding offbeat: Our wedding was offbeat because it reflected my unusual African and Mongolian background, which we dubbed Afrolian, and the groom and brides love of punk rock.

We wanted something fun and glamorous without going over our $5000 budget. Well, our guest list more then doubled and so did our budget, but we were able to achieve our goal of glamour, punk rock, zebra and lace within our 5 month planning period. It was a blast.

And the bridesmaids have more tattoos than the Hell's Angels and our pastor was our best friend from the Teen Idol's who has a black eye.

Our biggest challenge: Our biggest challenge was our budget. Since I work as an essential personal assistant I live and breath food, expensive things, and diamond encrusted everything. The only problem is my paycheck doesn't afford me the luxury to spend $300,000 on a wedding.

My favorite moment: My favorite moment was when we were announced as husband and wife.

My advice for other offbeat brides: Throw tradition out the window. Do something that means something to both of you… and don't fight too much.

  1. I love it! I am going to sound like such a geek, but everyone looks sexy! Who knew everyone in a wedding party could look sexy…. usually there is at least one person looking a lil' frumpy…. not here!

  2. Hey all! Thanks for the sweet words, it turned out really fun! And I think you are all right, my bridesmaids are the sexiest girls around! It's wedding week in my world and Time Out Chicago just published an article about our wedding if anyone wants to read what we did on our big day.

  3. OMG i'm getting married in chicago this halloween. where did you get your flowers??? they are beautiful!

  4. Jessica, Congrats on the nuptials! Where are you getting married? I made all the floral arrangments. If you need any help, let me know.
Vitya and Celeste, they did get the dresses from the dress came in burgundy and black and were called the Greta dress.
