I have to confess, I got a little teary-eyed over Andrew and Jackie's Giving Tree wedding invitations, made by Kim from NMI Creations. (Did you pick up on the special wording of “share” and “give” like for The Giving Tree? Subtle, eh?)

If you think the invitations are cute, wait until you see their matching Save the Dates AND the completed invitation suite with the hidden tear-inducing surprise!

But wait — it actually gets cuter…

The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein is my favorite. book. ever. I remember reading it with my grandmother, who told me that she met Shel Silverstein and he signed the book — only years later did I realize she was the one who wrote his autograph. I remember listening to the book in first grade when my teacher, Mrs. Millstone, read the book out loud to us. Although she must have read it every year since the beginning of time, her voice choked back tears through those final few pages. I remember finding the book again after my senior year of college, when I moved back home. Folding back the faded cover and yellowed pages in the midst of dust-covered dolls and textbook filled satchels, I finally realized that through the simplicity of its word, the messages were profound: Compassion, Sacrifice, Growing old as a pair, Acceptance, and Unconditional Love.

TEARS!

  1. I love that, that was definitely one of my favourite books growing up. I have a stump & heart tattoo inspired in part by it. Our wedding is on water or else we would’ve included trees. These are simple enough looking but they have a lot of thought put into them, minimalism can go a long way.

  2. The invitations are gorgeous, but I hate the giving tree. In the book the tree is female. The little boy takes ad takes from her until she is a stump, and then he is happy when she is a stump.

    :/

    • I have the same sentiment when it comes to the book, but the invites are precious and I did tear up a bit looking at them.

  3. LOVE.
Except I cry in that book every darn time. I used to be a children’s librarian, and I would NEVER have ever considered even trying to read that one aloud. 😉

  4. I think that yes the book can have different interpretations, but I didn’t look at it as having unequal sharing in a partnership, I kind of always saw it as the mom who eats the burnt toast and gets the back back wrapping Christmas presents all night and can’t move or enjoy her holiday but everyone else is happy and it makes her feel special type thing. Or maybe if not someone’s maternal mother, how we treat mother earth, and we should keep some resources for other people, whatever it is honestly and truly about I think it still is subjective, we could say it was a code for communism vs consumerism for all I care, and I still think its a great book. If you’re happy giving all you have until you become a stump, then good be a stump, if you’re happy taking or giving or being equals that’s good too. Infact, it can also serve as a reminder to be aware of how much you do or don’t do, take or don’t take, and if you are taking someone’s everythings to at least not take THEM for granted like they’ll always be there just because they’ve always been there. If you’re going to freeload, be grateful. [I haven’t worked for a year and a half, so I take a lot financially but I’m emotionally available, and help around the house, I’m supportive in other ways] There are people who really do thrive on being generous and depended on, it takes all kinds.

  5. Very cute! I wonder how many people would find the hidden excerpt… and how customizable it is. I mean, what if the bride proposed to the groom? Or they’re two brides? Just curious. But very, very cute!

  6. Is the “hidden excerpt” a quote from Shel Silverstein, or just Silverstein-inspired? I really like it.

  7. Those are amazing! Also, I see that it’s in Lisle, IL–I live the next town over (Naperville), so hello! 🙂 If you have any local vendors you’d like to share, I’d love to hear about it!
