Offbeat Advertising

Putting advertising on this website wasn't a decision I took lightly, and I figured I'd explain myself for those who are interested. And so, you get a numbered list! Isn't this fun?

1. First, the obvious: I created the Offbeat Blog as a way to promote my book, Offbeat Bride
I know, obvious right?

2. People really seem to like the Offbeat Blog
Yay! This is awesome. Thousands of you come to the site each week looking for inspiration and ideas, and it makes me happy to be able to help. I'm sort of OCD when it comes to helping people, so it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy to know that so many people are getting so much from this site.

3. Some folks who read the blog don't buy the book
I've gotten lots of advice questions from brides asking me about topics that I cover in the book, and when I say "Erm, did you read chapter 22?" I usually get a sheepish, "Oh, well I don't actually have the book — but I love your website!" This makes me wonder if I've almost made the blog too good or something — am I giving away information when I should instead be encouraging folks to buy the book? But that makes me mad: I'm not going to write a sub-par blog just because I'm trying to drive sales to my book. That feels icky.

4. My book promotional push is over.
The book hit bookstores almost six months ago, and all my other promotional activities have wound down — my book tour is done. My press push is over. I have other projects that are starting to call to me. This suggests that the time for Offbeat Blog is over …

but wait a minute! I don't want to stop blogging here! Then again, I pay my bills with my writing, and as an indie business woman, I know it's not smart to put energy into an endeavor that's not earning its keep. Sucks.

Therefore: Advertising. The editorial ads are picked and chosen by me, so there's a bit of an editorial filter. (Read more about my policy over here). I realize that some of the Google ads you'll see in a few places on the site aren't especially Offbeat, but my hope is that they'll be close enough as to get enough clicks for me to justify continuing the Offbeat Blog as a business endeavor.

Oh and if you haven't yet, for godsake: PLEASE BUY THE BOOK. Or a t-shirt. Or hell: just make use of an ad.

Regardless, thanks to each of you for making the Offbeat Blog such a success … and thanks for your patience as I figure out how to keep it going!

  1. what's your take on those who ask for paypal donations on/for their blogs? i'm still undecided on this one, but would love to know what you think. (not that i'm thinking of asking for donors myself, just curious.)

    btw, i love how you've tastefully worked the google ads into the site design.

  2. hey. i bought the book. and, you ain't just tootin your own horn… it is totally worth it. i am not even getting married in the forseeable future(though i am studying to be a ceremony officiant.) and this is my favorite book that i have read on weddings so far.
    thank you.
    oh, and i still read the blog every day…. who can resist fresh wedding porn.

  3. Pay-pal campaigns can work as a one-off fund raising tool … but just leaving a "DONATE NOW!" button on your blog doesn't generate much interest. I remember doing a pay-pal campaign in 2001 when my glasses broke and I was unemployed. I think I made perhaps $100 — which totally helped pay for my glasses, but certainly wasn't going to cover the rent.

    Even the biggest bloggers can't make the "donate now!" thing work. Jason Kottke tried it, and it failed. And if Kottke, with his bazillions of hits can't do it, well then….

  4. I own your book & LOVE it! I'm actually thinking of getting it for another friend who just got engaged because it's been so helpful. I love that you blog as well though because, though it all fits within the "Offbeat Bride" context, it's nice to have new content as well. I like the site so much that I would subscribe if need be. You are amazing, Ariel, and a real inspiration to brides (and grooms)!

  5. Hey Ariel, I received your book in the mail the other day. It only took about a week or so to arrive.

    Nevertheless, I hope you'll be able to promote the book more. I'm barely paving the way to marriage, but I wanted to buy your book to generate ideas, and since reading your blog, I've flipped over everything about what I thought a real wedding was.

    My hope is that when I'm planning my wedding, I can pick your book off my shelf and re-read it, feeling as if it was an old companion that I somehow lost touch with over the years.

    Just wanted to voice my support. I found your website just as I was getting thoroughly frustrated by mainstream wedding publications, and it's been a lifesaver. I did end up purchasing the book (great read!) but I think you're wise to adapt your plans to your readership; I work in publishing myself, and I know we've got a few titles that have done much better as Google-ad-funded weblogs/resouce centers than as print books.

    It's a strange new world out there, and a lot of traditional book marketing techniques just aren't as effective as they used to be (think book tours and signings), while new media can take off in unexpected ways.

    Both your website and book are tremendous resouces; thank you for putting them out there!

  9. Your book is awesome. I have recommended it to several women. I am a recently ordained Minister, AND recently engaged. I am going to be using several ideas, AND have been using it as a resource and reference guide to a few couples that want me to marry them, since I kinda refuse to do a "traditional" wedding. So thanks. AND when I get some Mulah of my own, I will advertise on your site. 🙂

    Just about to finish your book (received it yesterday) and am all ready with my highlighter to go through it again! It's a real inspiration and I'm about ready to start my own blog on wedding dresses, and my fiance and I can't wait to start out wedblog!

    It's a shame I don't know more people getting married (am I the last one?) or I'd be buying them all a copy. Rock on Ariel. Kepp updating the blog, I'm an RSS feed whore :o)
