If there's one thing we love, it's a good proposal story.

Now, we really love an intimate, meaningful, and sweet proposal, but sometimes you just want to hear a neat story of nerdy, wonderful, and weird wedding proposals.

We've seen some amazing offbeat wedding proposals and we wanted to round up some of the ones we've featured, some we love from around the web, and some that have just become legend.

Let's go down the rabbit hole of geeky, romantic, and wonderfully weird wedding proposals.

With the help of Harry Potter

Rachel proposed to Jaquie in a way no Harry Potter fan could refuse: the ring was hidden inside a golden snitch! We spied a golden snitch ring box right here.

With the help of Mario

If Harry Potter isn't your love guru, could the 8-bit plumber be the one? If you're this geeky couple, it was just the right setting.

Will you be my player 2?

Another way Mario can help!

When he opened it I could only manage to squeak out “Wanna get married?” and he looked at the box and then at me with a confused and surprised expression. Luckily, he responded “Yes!”… and then followed it up with a pout and “But I want to be player one!!” Read more…

Hidden in a custom mug

Nothing says a better mood for agreeing to marry someone than to propose after a full cuppa joe. A well-caffeinated person is a happy person.

Mer-made in the shade

Rachel and her fiancé are cosplayers, and got engaged in the best way possible — in Little Mermaid cosplay! As Rachel explained…

Daniel secretly set up a little mermaid photo shoot for my friend and I, and then showed up in the middle of it dressed as Prince Eric. I was in my mermaid tail on the riverside when he got down on one knee, with a little seashell box, and asked me to marry him. It was like something out of a fairytale.

Enlist the cast of The Next Generation

With a good portion of the cast of Star Trek the Next Generation looking on at Austin's Wizard World comic-con, this dude got on one knee. Apparently the groom said, “I love Star Trek, but I love her more.” Our nerdy hearts beat wildly.

The “LARPosal”

My boyfriend Matt proposed to me in the most elaborate way possible. He, along with all of our closest friends, orchestrated an epic LARP (Live Action Role Play) adventure where I got to play the hero and save him from a terrible evil. To say that I'm the world's luckiest girl is the understatement of the century.

With an eHarmony dupe

Dave proposed to his partner with an online dating site parody at Daveloveselizabeth.com. Spolier: it went well and even spawned a sequel!

A meme-tastic proposal

Redditor SirTechnocracy’s proposed to his girlfriend on Reddit itself with artwork commissioned through deviantART users with a lot of geek culture and internet meme references. She naturally responded with her own meme.

A MUTUAL proposal

To kick off the planning process, we chose a day that would be THE DAY. We picked a day where neither of us had other plans or commitments, a day that we could be fully present. We split this day up so that we could both plan surprises and gifts for one another. We also wanted to commemorate the day for years to come so we hired a professional photographer to capture the moments. Read more…

“Will You Marry Me?” QR Code T-shirt

QR code will save us

Secret codes take on a 21st century vibe with a QR code that will ask your partner to marry you. So nerdy, so awesome.

Triple word score engagement

Your bibliophile wordsmith partner will give you the best score ever with this proposal.

Proposing with a custom video game

Sammy is an indie game developer who makes a game for his games user researcher girlfriend Tasha every year. This year he ramped up his romance game to the max by adding in a surprise Pokémon game proposal. Read more here…

Cinephiles unite!

This one appeals to the movie-goer in me. Plus, all that planning makes it so awesome! This guy proposed with all of the movie stubs from the films they'd seen together. D'aww.

On the log ride

This one's an oldie but a goodie. The fun part is that you can get your friends (or a few willing loge ride mates) to help and your partner won't know it's happening until they see the photo at the end.

Just one more Potterphile way

If you're not opposed to carving out a real book (I know, some of you are!), this “unbreakable vow” ring holder is pretty darn adorable.

  1. Wow – I’ve never seen so many interesting ways to propose!! The Log ride was my favorite!

  2. Aw YAY! I love creative geeks!

My fiance proposed at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, behind The Three Broomsticks (with a lovely view of Hogwarts). The day was rainy, in January, so the park was fairly deserted, all lit up, and gorgeous. It was about closing time, too. He pulled out a wand, took my hand, and said “Accio ring” and then- like magic- there was a ring in my hand. Apparently, he’d been practicing the slight of hand for months. 🙂
(also, apparently, I cut him off mid-proposal when he mistakenly thought I’d need a minute to admire the ring. Of course, after 0.2 seconds I blurted out “is this an engagement ring?!” and killed his whole sweet speech).

The only problem with a nerdy proposal, though, is the bar is raised for an equally nerdy, sweet wedding.

  3. The way my friends got engaged was similar to this. He arranged for her to have a weekend away, and he and some friends set up their house like the crystal maze (as she is loves the tv show). They even videoed friends and family to get them to explain the next challenge, with each room being something different. They then set up the lounge with 8 hairdryers and confetti, whilst she was grabbing the golden tickets, he dropped down on one knee with her real “crystal”.
As a wedding present, we then got paid for a group of 6 of them to go to the Kings Cross remake of the game, and so she could experienced the real thing.
