Not that I have anything against Etta James' “At Last” or Michael Buble's “Everything,” — they're both a perfect first dance song — but I've heard them both WAY too many times at weddings.
So, combining my database of musician friends (some of whom made the list) with the Offbeat Wed editorial team's tastes, we've compiled a list of totally not overused first dance songs… from the silly, to the romantic, to the extremely controversial! Because when the newlyweds step onto the dance floor, we want to keep things unique!
The goal here is to share wedding songs that you might not have heard too many times. We love the likes of Jason Mraz, Ed Sheeran, John Legend, Adele, Jack Johnson, and Frank Sinatra too, but if you want your guests to feel surprised at your reception, you might want to go for one of these more unusual first dance songs.

My fiance and I are HUGE David Bowie fans, so we are torn between “Word on a Wing” and “Wild is the Wind”, both off of Station to Station. When we first got together, he told me that “Word on a Wing” was his song for me, so it has a lot of sentimental value, and will probably be the song we choose.
I can’t believe nothing by Frank Sinatra or Dean Martin made th “oldies by goodies” section. They have some really good stuff. Cheesy, yes, but not overplayed.

I walked down the isle to Tracy Chapman’s “Wedding Song”. I haven’t seen it listed on any of these wedding websites and it was by far the most amazing and best worded song I ever heard for a wedding… and I have played it over and over again since I have been married and still love it as much as the first time I heard it. you can find it on youtube
If I ever get married, I’d like to dance to either “Come Away with Me” or “The Nearness of You” by Norah Jones. “When I Fall In Love” is also a wonderful song, and probably my favorite love song at the moment is “Kiss from a Rose” by Seal.

Voltaire – “Stuck With You” is a beautiful duet with dark humor. It’s more about being stuck with someone who you might be unhappy with sometimes, but you stick by them anyway. Perfect for those who realize they aren’t perfect and marriage is a work in progress.

We are totally dancing to “First Day of My Life.” Even though it doesn’t really have a “dancy” feel. I still love it and it’s so perfect it makes me cry thinking about it. My fiancee put it on one of the first CDs he made me. 🙂

The FH and I are mostly into Rock and Heavy Metal. Not only is our wedding off beat in that its an outdoor bbq style affair with a camp-out to follow (we’re holding it at a campground in our county, and renting out a bunch of campsites), but the focus is less on the ceremony and more on the festivities after.

I’ve been hearing some friends talk about using “Everlong” by the Foo Fighters… The regular version is cool and upbeat so it’s a pretty good dancing song, but the acoustic version is pretty and mellow, good for slow dancing.

Definitely not typical Ani – lyrics are about her own marriage! And the melody is gorgeous and perfect for slow-dancing.
We’re doing a pretty non-traditional ceremony and likely won’t do the first dance thing (also the thought of dancing in front of 100 guests gives me hives), but I’m set on playing Pavement’s “Major Leauges” right after our friend/officiant declares us married. If FORCED to do a first dance, though, it’d be tough to beat Pulp’s “Common People.”

Me and my man are getting married after 19 years and three kids. After 19 years of ups, downs, joy sorrow and long periods of the absolute mundane, there aren’t too many songs that don’t apply to us! I’m thinking pre-ceromony of Come On Up To The House-Sarah Jarosz and Here Comes The Sun Again- M.ward as a call to organize. Immediately post ceremony it’s currently a three way tie between Steady As She Goes- The Raconteurs, Memories Are Made of This- Johnny Cash or Breathless- Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.

Our first dance song is going to be Damned If I do by Jace Everett. I’d put that in the sexy category! I’m also walking down the aisle to Song To The Siren off of the album This Mortal Coil. Both are awesome songs!
My husband and I danced to Warmness on the Soul by Avenged Sevenfold. I love A7X, and also had complete creative control over the music at the wedding, otherwise it would have been totally sappy and full of line dances…yikes!
My boyfriend hates dancing, so once we started talking about wedding, I started thinking of songs that had great meaning, but were on the short side. My first thoughts were Jim Croce’s Time in a Bottle, or Death Cab for Cutie’s I Will Follow You Into the Dark. Eventually, I hit on an idea my bf thought was perfect – Jonathon Coulton’s You Ruined Everything. It’s short enough for him, obscure enough for me, and has the WTF factor that we love doing to our friends. “I’ve forgotten who I was before you ruined everything, in the nicest way”. Sweetest song ever.
We did Wildflowers, Tom Petty. I’ve also heard one I thought would be good – Feel the Tide, Mumford and Sons.
At the most personalised wedding I have ever seen, I sang “Friday I’m in Love” by The Cure with my old room mate playing uke during the signing part of the ceremony. We personalised the bridge to be about the B&G and I did a kazoo solo. So much fun!
One song that I’d love to have as our first dance is For You by Tracy Chapman. I haven’t told my OH yet but fingers crossed he goes for it 🙂

I’ve found two that I think haven’t been done as first dance songs very often. Then again, I haven’t gone to many weddings, so I don’t know how accurate my assessment would be. One is ‘Free In You’ by Indigo Girls. The other is ‘This At Last’ by Christopher Grundy. ‘This At Last’ is a Christian song, but it’s progressive (a.k.a liberal) Christian.

We danced to “Caught Up In the Rapture” by Anita Baker, which was perfect because my husband loves Anita Baker and that song always makes me think of him. I have never heard anyone else have Anita Baker, much less that song, as a first-dance – not even “Sweet Love” or whatever. She’s underrated!

I understand them not wanting to be played by more conservative couples, especially if children/elderly persons/religious guests are in attendance, but they’re really fun (the RHPS music is probably easier to dance to, compared to the ever changing tempo of the A7X song). “All I Want is You” by Barry Louis Polisar is going to be our wedding march song! Always thought it would be from the first time I heard it. I kinda hate that the song is in a green bean commercial or something like that.
Our song was chosen within a couple months of dating in high school. We danced to Snow Patrol’s “Chasing Cars”… twice! It was such a nice surprise for our DJ to play it as the last song for us. It gave us a chance to really take in the whole rollercoaster ride of a day. We were surrounded by the remaining guests, and I was bawling my eyes out. It is such a sweet and beautiful song, much like the rest of Snow Patrol’s work. We will be together for 8 years (3 married, we wed on the anniversary of our first date) on July 22nd 🙂

I love this.. theres so many options out there. I walked down the isle to “Let it be” played on piano. And my first dance song was, “Crazy Girl” by Eli Young Band. Remember you guys have some country girls in the group, and theres a TON of country love songs. If they want to get a little wild, throw in some George Straight, Alabama, or even some classic bluegrass. Everyone loved it when i threw in “Little White Church” by Little big town. =)

Also, the civil wars “C’est La Mort” (yes it means such is death, but the song is love noir- it’s ok if you leave this earth, just don’t got without me, I kinda like the dark undertone though it’s meant lovingly) and their version of “dance me to the end of love” both are beautiful! 🙂
Thanks for this list! Some great ideas–my fiancee isn’t really into music, so I’ve been tasked with this one. If you’re interested, though, we’re thinking about either Sarah Harmer’s “Open Window (The Wedding Song)”, or if I can find a stripped down version of it, Garbage’s “The World Is Not Enough”. (An acoustic version of When In Rome’s “The Promise” might also make the cut…)
This list made me really happy. My fiancé’s and my song is “Love You to Death” by Type O Negative. I was worried about using it because I was worried about “offending” some of my older, more conservative relatives, but this reassures me that it’s fine and a song that means that much to us really is the only appropriate choice.
We ultimately picked “Together” by The Raconteurs. Nice pace for twirling while maintaining a series of slow dance moves.
My fiance and I picked Running by No Doubt.
We used the George Harrison cover of “Between the Devil and The Deep Blue Sea” …. it really summed up our very tumultuous relationship leading up to our marriage (smooth sailing since)… We broke up so many times but just like the song … we kept “running back for more”… anyway we were so happy with the song choice… and we’re HUGE George Harrison fans so that was a plus! I also wanted to say, unconventional though it may be… I think “No Children” is maybe one of the best love songs ever!
