Announcing the birth of our sister site: Offbeat Mama!

The Offbeat Bride Tribe (OBT) is the private online network for brides (and grooms!) inspired by offbeatbride.com. This category highlights the best of the OBT, with guest blogs from members, and roundups of OBT wedding inspiration.

OBT member Sandy and her partner made these amazing Save The Dates. They're planning a pirate wedding and they wanted their STDs to convey the pirate wedding theme to guests early on. I think these messages in bottle topped with jolly roger wax seals do a pretty damn good job of that…

For the maps, I did a print screen of the San Diego area in Google Maps and traced over it in a transparent layer in Adobe Illustrator – then deleted the original map, used a bunch of filters, and added the border, gridlines and location names. The X roughly marks the spot of the wedding/reception location. The compass rose was clip art. I scoured the web for pirate fonts until I found ones we liked.

We bought all our materials online. Here's some vendor info for anyone looking for referrals (we were really happy with everyone we ordered from):

OBT member Derek Kyle Noel made, yes MADE, these incredible Ouija board save-the-dates for his upcoming Halloween wedding.

For more photos and information about how he made these puppies, head over to his post about them on So You're EnGAYged where Derek also blogs about his upcoming "Gay Boy Halloween Wedding."

Ah Geek Week, you keep producing such gems…

Take a gander at OBT member Lara drew and designed their invitations, giving nods to Japanese animation studio Studio Ghibli, and Zelda: The Wind Walker. And even if you're not geeky enough to get the references… they look freaking AMAZING! (As you view them keep in mind that the three images are supposed to sit next to each other.)

Just in time to celebrate Geek WeekOffbeat Bride Tribe member Darina and her fiance Niko have unveiled their 8-bit video game wedding invitations that they designed themselves!

Darina explains:

"We knew that we didn't want standard paper invites. We wanted something for people to keep and remember. We are geeks. We love video games. Why not have a video game invite?"

The video games have two player choices, you're either the bride or the groom. And the goal is to get to the end to see all the wedding info. So here's what it looks like…

Okay fellow geeks and nerds, get ready to be super stoked about these XKCD save-the-dates made by OBT member Jordan! Boomdeyada…

From Jordan's OBT update:

"So here's our Save the Date — we're just e-mailing it (FH did a great job of figuring out how to get to it to go in the body of the e-mail without coming off as spam). Art is by Randall Munroe of our favorite webcomic XKCD (please please visit www.xkcd.com if you have never done so, he's awesome). I'm super excited!"

Ariel and I are big fans of XKCD, and when I showed this to Ariel she pointed out that "of extra geeky importance is that all XKCD comics are Creative Commons licensed — meaning that this is a totally legit appropriation!" Which I did not know, but I'm glad of it because it means that if any of you out there are inspired by this, you too can have some pretty amazing XKCD wedding invites and STDs!
