J. Scott Indiana Wedding PhotographyOffbeat Brides in Indiana, your time has finally come! If you’re looking for a Indianapolis wedding photographer who’s friendly to the ways of the non-trad bride (red dress? fairy wings? no problem!), J. Scott Photography is ready for you.

Run by Jamie and Brandy, a husband and wife team who played the theme to “The Odd Couple” at their own wedding, J. Scott Photography’s shots clearly run towards the artist and lush.

Jamie has a fine arts degree, and you can see from their wedding photo gallery that he definitely brings that aesthetic eye to his wedding photography as well.

James + Kat + CakeIf you’re a member of the OBT, then you know that one of our mods, Kathleen, just got married this weekend in British Columbia, wearing a fabulous fire engine red wedding dress.

The first few fabulous photos have been uploaded on Flickr. Can’t wait to see more! Thanks to Kat for all her work as an OBT mod these past six months.

(Thanks to kat mountain for the photo!)

w15Why kill flowers when you can just make one, in the case of this origami boutonniere.

The bridal party got origami necklaces, origami place cards, the centerpieces and even the bride’s bouquet were made from origami flowers!

It’s officially wedding season, and while many of you might be planning offbeat weddings, chances are good that you have a couple traditional weddings to attend this summer. Here’s one non-intrusive, respectful way that you as an offbeat guest can bring a little offbeat flavor into any wedding:

Conduct your own photo project at the reception
Make a nice sign that says something like “CONGRATULATIONS, JOE & JANE!” Get as crafty as you want with it, or just print out a piece of paper. Then, bring your sign and your camera to the wedding, and during the reception, ask your fellow guests if you can photograph them holding the sign.

You’ll end up with a bunch of photos sort of like these, which you can then print and make a sweet Blurb book for the newlyweds.

This is also a great way to interact with your fellow guests — you don’t have to talk too long to anyone, but can make a point to meet everyone and make them feel a part of something fun.

wedding dress...needs to be shortened and fitted stillA while back I ranted about how I think brides are best off having their wedding dresses custom made — you’ll get a better fit, exactly the design you want, and won’t have to suffer the attitudes and obscene prices of a bridal boutique.

There was some grumbling in the comments about “Ok, fine: but how do you find a custom dressmaker?” My best advice is start in your immediate circle and work your way out &mash; do you know any seamstresses or amazing sewers? Do any of your friends or family known any? If not, search online or in the Yellow Pages for someone locally. Being able to do fittings in person is a big bonus. If there’s no-one in town you like, then start looking online for seamstresses with styles you like who will work with you via email.

The ladies of the OBT came to the rescue with lots more tips on picking a custom dressmaker, as well as specific dressmaker recommendations:
