Offbeat Fashion: Beautiful dreadlocked bride

November 3rd, 2008 · Posted by Ariel

I wish I could tell you more about this beautiful dreadlocked bride with her neo-tribal feather and bone headpiece.

All I know is that her name is Sonya, she got married at a beautiful outdoor location in Santa Barbara, and I think this might be her bridal lingerie. If so: whoa.

…Everything else you’ll have to infer for yourself from photographer Chris Hansen’s Facebook album.

UPDATE: Go feast your eyes on all the amazingness and get the full scoop on Sonya & Jeffery’s wedsite. You’ll find so much inspiration over there that your head might EXPLODE!

Bride profiles: Nicole & Stew’s Unusually Elegant Central Park Wedding!

October 9th, 2008 · Posted by Shrie, the offbeat intern

The offbeat bride: Nicole, Landscape Architect

Her offbeat partner: Stew, Photographer & Designer

Location & date of wedding: Hernshead Pavilion Central Park, NYC - July 13th, 2008

What made our wedding offbeat: We found out about Hernshead Pavilion, a Victorian pavilion by one of the lakes in Central Park. It cost us only $25 for a two hour permit. Since we don’t share in a fear of the number 13 (it’s one of my personal favorite numbers) we were able to get the time we wanted despite our short planning period! Hooray!

chloeA while back I answered an advice question about how to style your dreadlocks on your wedding day. Well, Chloe here may rocking my very favorite dread style ever.

Tidy with the hairline baby hairs slicked over and a bit formal with those rosebuds — but still fully textured and genuine.

(Thanks to drtoast for the photo, and Amy for bringing the wedding to my attention!)

Can you steer me in the direction of wedding hair for chicks with dreads? My mom is fucking tripping (which is so completely weak considering that I’m 32 and paying for the shindig) so I thought I’d get her to chillax with some dready wedding goddess hair pix. Thanks so much… I must say Mama~ Andreas SCORED! (Will you thank him for sharing you with us?!) — Reba

dready-wedding.jpgAww, *blush*. Thanks, Reba! I’ll remind Andreas of that next time he’s irked at me for leaving a trail of girlwind detritus behind me all over the house. :)
Ok, now to answer your question about wedding dreads! Hoo-boy. This is a beloved topic of mine, since back in the day (creak creak creak) I used to have some wild dreads myself. There’s so much great inspiration for you out there!

Let’s start with what not to do. I was a bridesmaid in a friend’s wedding back in 2000, and we went to a traditional hair salon to get our make-up and up-dos. Here’s how I ended up. The look was sorta psychedelic Marge Simpson, and while it was relatively tidy, I’m not sure I’d recommend the look to anyone else. (And don’t even get me started on the heavy make-up. Dre could hardly look at me all day!)

Anyway, for lots of inspiration for how you could style your dreads, keep on reading…
