Members of the OBT already know Kat — she’s one of my beloved moderators! Here’s the full story on her awesome Solistice wedding
The offbeat bride: Kat, bookseller and OBT moderator
Her offbeat partner: James, writer
Location & date of wedding: My dad & step-mum’s house, Lantzville, BC. June 21, 2008, Summer Solstice
What made our wedding offbeat: We managed to pull off a spectacular wedding with a very limited budget and a lot of help from our families and friends. Our visibly offbeat elements included my red dress and glittery Betsey Johnson shoes, the men’s Converse shoes and skull ties, my bridesmen, our Buffy & Angel cake topper and our Handfasting.
The real offbeat aspect was that the wedding was 100% a reflection of the two of us. Having a handfasting was really important to me, and my non-Wiccan husband was totally into it. Our ceremony was officiated by two women and I was walked down the aisle by both my parents, elements that reflected our feminist values.

Ariel,
I received my copy of Offbeat Bride in the mail yesterday and am already more than halfway through it. I just wanted to say.. THANK YOU.

My partner Georgia and I are far from traditional - we’re gay, which is probably the biggest (and most exciting) challenge in planning a wedding (yes, a real wedding - thank you Canada!!!). She’s the long-haired, broken-shit-fixin’, boy-clothes-wearin’, hairy-legged, likes to be spooned gender enigma, and I’m the equally puzzling short haired, boy’s-name-havin’, makeup-loving girly girl. Needless to say, we’re throwing most tradition right out the window.

As a fellow pinkie myself, I am totally in love with OBT member Kim Dayman’s bright pink wedding hair. And is it just me, or does her hair perfect match her anatomical heart tattoo?
You’ll find lots more pink-haired wedding porn on Kim’s OBT blog!
If you’re a member of the OBT, then you know that one of our mods, Kathleen, just got married this weekend in British Columbia, wearing a fabulous fire engine red wedding dress.
The first few fabulous photos have been uploaded on Flickr. Can’t wait to see more! Thanks to Kat for all her work as an OBT mod these past six months.
(Thanks to kat mountain for the photo!)
The offbeat bride: Kat, Craftsperson
Her offbeat groom: Kurt, Computer Engineer
Location & date of wedding: Ottawa, ON (Canada), married at the Army Officer’s Mess. June 23rd, 2007
What made our wedding offbeat: Our wedding seemed fairly traditional on the surface — it was held at a popular local venue for formal events, the bride wore an off-white wedding gown and the groom wore black tails. The offbeat part of the wedding was in the little details. Both my husband and I changed our last names. I had a maid of honour, two bridesmaids, and a bridesman in my party. Our cake topper was a Lego couple that I put together myself from diverse pieces I’d ordered online.

Canadian photographer Trevor Jansen has put together an awesome website full of some gorgeous, inspiring photos of bad-ass brides, grooms, and engaged couples. The URL cracks me up (partners-in-crime.ca), but the photos are straight up hotness:

The offbeat bride: Stacey, Figure Skating Coach & Graphic Designer
Her offbeat groom: Joel, Motion Capture Specialist
Location & date of wedding: Strathcona Park Lodge between Campbell River and Gold River, BC. August 25, 2007
What made our wedding offbeat: My job as a Graphic Designer was at a wedding invitation design studio. My whole life had been filled with other people’s wedding plans for years. I’d always been the one dishing out advice and helping people with their taffeta filled or very alternative plans. So when it was my turn I had lots of ideas but I also knew that everything had to be different from anything I had worked on for a client. Having helped with a few hundred weddings, that was very difficult but it also pushed me to try things I wouldn’t have otherwise.
