When she got engaged, she researched ideas for invitation sets, and noticed a conspicuous lack of sophisticated scientific wedding invitations. Having extensive experience blending graphic design and science, Amanda decided to design her own wedding invitation suite and found her calling — she's been happily designing scientific invitations since!

Haeckel Wedding Invitation Suite

The scientific drawings featured in this set were done by Ernst Haeckel, a German biologist and artist who discovered and named hundreds of species in the late 19th and early 20th century. These specific drawings come from his book, Kunstformen der Natur, and one of his reports from the H.M.S. Challenger, a scientific expedition in 1872 that lay the foundation for the modern field of oceanography.

Electricity

The Lichtenberg Wedding Invitation Suite

Lichtenberg figures are branching, tree-like patterns that are created by the passage of high voltage electrical discharges along the surface of, or through, electrically insulating materials. They are named after the German physicist Georg Christoph Lichtenberg, who discovered them in 1777. Professor Lichtenberg used various devices to electrically charge the surfaces of insulating materials. He then sprinkled powdered substances onto the charged surface that would be attracted to either positive or negative charges, making the paths traveled by the discharge visible. Lichtenberg also discovered that the shapes of positively and negatively charged figures were significantly different: figures created by positive discharges were star-shaped with long, branching paths, while figures created by negative discharges were shorter, rounded, and fan-shaped.

Engineering

The Tesla Wedding Invitation Suite

Nikola Tesla (1856 -1943) was an inventor, electrical engineer, and mechanical engineer. He made great contributions to many fields of study and held over 250 patents worldwide, including a patent for an induction motor that runs on alternating current. His induction motor is the grandfather of motors in modern household appliances. This set uses eleven of his patents, including several motors and generators, a wireless bulb, a steam engine, an electrical distribution system, and a power transmission system. The script font used in this suite is based on his handwriting.

Astronomy

The Syzygy Wedding Suit

In astronomy, a syzygy is a straight line configuration of three celestial bodies in a gravitational system. The word is often used to reference the alignment of the Sun, Earth, and Moon during eclipses. An eclipse occurs when a body totally or partially disappears from view. A lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes directly behind the Earth into its shadow. A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, and the Moon fully or partially blocks the Sun. The Moon's orbit is slightly tilted relative to the Earth's orbit, so solar eclipses only occur between two and five times per year. Total solar eclipses are even rarer, and only seen from particular locations on the Earth.

This suite was made to highlight the total solar eclipse occurring on August 21st, 2017, viewable from all of North America.

  1. I ordered Amanda’s Selenography suite for our wedding and couldn’t be happier with the quality of the invites or the experience of working with her! At least 50% of my guests commented on the awesomeness of the invite when they returned the RSVP.
