This woodsy chic backyard wedding was a labor of love

Corey and George had an intimate wedding that celebrated the vibrant colors of fall and their waterfront backyard venue in the woods. They grew their own flowers, and the bride's mother made her bouquet which included a deer horn to honor the bride's father and the groom's mother. The groom surprised everyone with a live band, and they provided a huge drawing board for the kids and anyone who wanted to leave a love note for them. It was a chic backyard wedding, and a lovely labor of love with local vendors and gorgeous details.

Fairy nipple flowers & Khaleesi dresses: My Monique Lhuillier surprise visit

I knew my friend was taking me to a dress shop in LA that is filled with non-traditional dress options. But what I didn't know is that she made a surprise appointment for me at Monique Lhuillier.

Now, like anyone with eyeballs and an appreciation of the art of fashion, I loves me some Monique Lhuillier. But ME, a ratty little tomboy, in a Monique Lhullier? The thought made me laugh. But, what happened really surprised me…

Surviving as offbeat in mainstream online communities

Is it just me, or is it difficult being an Offbeat Bride on more traditional websites? While I love to talk about planning weddings, why are the communities on these websites as a whole so judgmental? Is it just me that's met with this…hostility, if I even dare to ask about something that seems too offbeat, taboo, and "rude?" We're just surviving as offbeat in mainstream online communities…

Chic-as-hell vintage lamps as centerpiece decor

Vanessa and Octavia had their industrial garden party wedding at the super industrial-chic venue, Tap Architecture in Oklahoma City. Our favorite part was their centerpiece decor that made their already gorgeously rough interior even more vintage-fabulous. The pair re-painted and re-covered all the lamps and lampshades used as centerpieces, cut custom fabric as table runners, and collected old books as decor. It was a labor of love that made us swoon for the homey vibe.

Ring Pops, donuts, and ladies in love at this Voodoo Donuts wedding

Natya and Kris had a small but kick-ass ceremony at the famous Voodoo Donuts in Portland, OR. There were, as always, about 20 people in line at the store and many more outside along the sidewalk. This meant that there were tons of onlookers, many of whom only just realized there was a tiny wedding happening.
There were gorgeous photos out by the waterfront, a sweet (literally and figuratively!) donut-filled ceremony with Ring Pop rings, and a gorgeous pair of ladies in love. Let's take a peek at this Voodoo Donuts wedding…

Level up at this arcade adventure quest wedding

This pair totally embraced the alternative reception concept with a no-dancing, board games, arcade-style, bowling celebration at their adventure quest wedding. You'll never believe how detailed their wedding quest was. Custom dice, tons of games, loads of awesome break-the-ice quests, all after a gorgeous forest preserve ceremony.

Lightsabers vs. wands: don't miss this Harry Potter meets Star Wars wedding

Andrea and Ron both have true passions for Harry Potter and Star Wars. They're convention fiends and travel all over the U.S. to celebrate their fandom faves. It was only right to incorporate that at their Harry Potter meets Star Wars wedding. Spot the references in their themed place cards and table numbers, the R2-D2 made completely out of flowers for the place card table, the EPIC handmade Marauders' Map programs (that took over 40 hours to create!), and wand vs. lightsaber battle.

Bridal "best selves": when is too far?

As with many Offbeat Bride readers, this blog was a welcome antidote to the bridal mags and blogs that represent all brides as being white, thin, tanned, and perfect. Not that there's anything wrong with those things, but when you don't fit into that round hole, the bridal industry can make you feel a bit like Square Peggy. Aiming for perfection in any aspect of a wedding, whether it's your letter-pressed invites or sun-dappled forest grove location, is asking for tears before bedtime.

Ring needs resizing? Here's why you should wait to wear it…

If your engagement or wedding ring needs resizing, there are some good reasons to wait to wear it. As someone who has worked in a chain jewelry store and done a lot of research out of personal interest, I've seen some real damage occur when a larger ring is worn before resizing. Letting it flop around and hitting against another ring to keep it in place is both bad for the metal and the stones. It puts it at much more at risk for knocking the stone out, chipping it, or breaking it completely depending on how old the stone is and what kind of inclusions it naturally has.

I solemnly swear these DIYed Harry Potter programs are up to no good

We've got a geektastic Harry Potter and Star Wars wedding coming up this week, but I seriously couldn't wait to share the DIYed Marauders' Map programs made by the bride, Andrea, herself. They took over 40 hours to make by hand and it shows. The Harry Potter programs opened in three different directions to reveal the sequence of events at the ceremony and a special thank you message from the couple.

Are you seeing the footprints pointing at "Processional?" So flippin' adorable. Fellow Potterphiles: are you not entertained?! Let's peek at the rest of these Harry potter programs at Andrea and Ron's wedding. Stay tuned for the rest of the wedding (including floral R2-D2!) later this week…

It's been one year since the SCOTUS decision that legalized same-sex marriage…

As the first anniversary of the SCOTUS decision that legalized same-sex marriage rolls around, we remember that the continued perseverance of these communities are making a difference. Is it still mind-blowingly slow and frustrating and hard? Hell yes. But as Lin Manuel Miranda so heart-wrenchingly uttered at The Tonys, "love is love is love is love is love is love is love is love cannot be killed or swept aside." This anniversary, marked with the pain of the worst mass shooting in recent U.S. history (which targeted the LGBT and people of color communities), has to remind us to keep fighting. Let's take a look back at some of our coverage of the various legal decisions and a few of our own favorite LGBT weddings we've featured.

Stop posing and start cuddling with an intimate photo session

When it comes to non-wedding couples' photo sessions, we've already seen rad engagement sessions, trash-the-dress shoots, and amazing, body=posi boudoir shoots. But we are loving the concept of an intimate photo session with the two of you and your chosen photographer. There's just something so sweet and vulnerable in these shots. If you have the option of getting a separate session with your wedding photographer, an intimate photo session like this just might be a great choice.

Chocolate-fiends: This grasshopper julep could be your chocolate signature cocktail

Hey, chocolate lovers: are you in need of a really good chocolate signature cocktail, or even an idea for a unity cocktail? This grasshopper julep might be your new favorite drink. We just had the Kentucky Derby, so a good, stiff bourbon drink is just what the drink doctor ordered. Hell, maybe just save this recipe for a particularly long crafting night. I won't judge. I'm probably drinking one right now anyway. Let's see how to make this mint meets chocolate meets booze delicious monstrosity.
