Mingle with reception guests in order of their age

Every once in awhile we get some super duper simple advice from our couples that make us totally smack our heads. This is one of those nuggets of wisdom. If you want to make sure to get a little time with all of your guests at the reception, mingle in order of age! Target those who are likely to leave earlier (older relatives, parents with young children, or guests with long drives home) and make them your first priority.

The weddings that weren't

I'm going to a wedding this weekend and I'm feeling just a little jealous.

It's been over two months since my wedding. It was everything my partner and I could have asked for, in four hours of pure awesome. The professional photos are stunning and capture how was very "us" it was. The wedding I'm going to this weekend is also very representative of the bride and groom — a guitar-themed, tequila-shooting wedding.

But a guitar-themed, tequila-shooting wedding is definitely not me… so why am I having wedding envy?

Say aww! So much adorbs at this Los Angeles wedding with spice jar cake toppers and a flowery dog of honor

Patty and Ryan said their I do's this past October in Los Angeles, and I'm telling you, the elegant cuteness abounds. First of all, the world needs more dogs-of-honor in flower wreaths, I'm just positive. Then there's the miniature tiki hut for cards and well wishes. And how can you forget the spice jars? The couple used spice jars as cake toppers — his last name is McCormick, and the couple selected an Asian spice as a nod to Patty's heritage.

Two grooms steal secret vineyard kisses and dance the hora at their California wedding

You don't have to have tropical beaches to make it a destination wedding! Jeff and Brandon said goodbye to New York and hello to California last October to get married in wine country. I dare anyone to flip through these gorgeous photos and NOT smile back at these two adorable men. The giggles! The kisses! The suits with tiny plaid! I personally could not hold back an "awww!" at their baby photos adorning the rows of chairs along the aisle. Seriously cool alternative to a slideshow or photo table.

Your jaw's gonna DROP at this curvacious blue dress, that groom's leather outfit, and those glow-in-the-dark tents

Zay and Stacey's wedding last June was a color and light EXPLOSION. After a weekend of camping and playing in the lake, the couple said their vows at sunset on the incredible fields of 80 Acres in Kansas. Damn, you two. If that's how good you look after a couple days of camping, I'd luv to know what you look like every day! Zay and Stacey each strutted their stuff in gorgeously fanciful wedding costumes. Zay was in leather from head to toe (complete with bare arms and lacing everywhere. Growl) while Stacey showed a blue dress what it was meant to look like.

Ember & Andrew's Mario Bros. meets Star Wars game store wedding

A Star Wars Sand Trooper, Mario mushrooms, and some retro styles all in the couple's favorite game store — this is one geeky fabulous wedding. Wait until you get a load of the homemade Kransekake, their first dance story, and the bride's lacey vintage-styled dress. Oh, and you'll get a kick out of what the groom did with their Mario cake!

Karen & Michelle's "love, joy, and happiness" blue celebration of love

Blue details, a blue dress, a blue vest, and touches of red… this multi-hued wedding is something fabulous to look at, but also something that may get your tear ducts going. This pair shines in every shot. Their April wedding may not have been a legal ceremony, but a little miracle happened and well, you'll just have to see how it all went down after that.

Wedding video real talk: Professional versus home movies

As we walked down the aisle, I had a moment of panic when I noticed multiple cameras on us — not only were our husband-and-wife photographer team standing at the end of the aisle waiting for us, there were two people with video cameras up there, too! Thoughts of wedding crashers who got in under the guise of being the hired videographer crossed my mind… but it turned out that both my wife's dad and my mom had decided to surprise us with a videographer. Here's what I learned from this unique experience of having the home video-style photography AND the professional videography…

How André the Giant helped guests drive home safely

We're going to feature Emily and Branan's Star Wars, wrestling, and badminton wedding later this week, but I couldn't wait to share this impressive way to dissuade over-drinking and encourage safe driving at the reception. They used a little tidbit about the booze tolerance of the late and most amazing André the Giant, which if you've read this book like I have recently, you'd know all about! Let's see how they did it.

Choose your wedding party carefully, and 6 more pieces of wedding advice I needed

I read every advice blog there was. I knew what should be in my emergency kit, and I was completely on top of all to-do lists. I had thought about all the things brides forget about. Despite how excited I was (and am) about my marriage, despite how awesome our loved ones are, and despite how much I love projects — I HATED planning our wedding. I believe my experience would have been a bit different if I had read this advice first…

Planning a wedding while dealing with the emotions of being a domestic abuse survivor

I have gone from being a young bride, to a survivor of domestic abuse, a divorcée, a fiancée, and now I find myself planning a wedding again. A wedding is supposed to be a happy experience. For me, this doesn't seem to be the case. With my looming nuptials I can't help but feel emotionally and physically drained. I remind myself every day that "he isn't my first husband."

Offbeat Bride Tribe withdrawals support group thread

The Offbeat Bride Tribe (our private online community for couples actively planning their weddings) is currently down for maintenance until December 30th. While our lead developer is hard at work rebuilding the Tribe's tools and functions from scratch, we can gather together in the comments here to drown our sorrows, ask questions, and give each other advice… Together, we'll make it to December 30th.

You need to do over your proposal

I avoid talking about the "proposal" part of our life because a lot of people don't understand it. We are in the age of "ommggg look at this YouTube flash dance wedding proposal that went viral and is now being featured on Good Morning America!" Our story just doesn't fit into that American narrative. It was simple, I was a part of the conversation, and it was nothing big and romantic.

DIY splatter paint Tasmanian wedding invitations

I'm an artist and I wanted the invitations to reflect our personalities as well as the casual party vibe we want to set for our New Year's Eve wedding. I printed all the invitations on our standard home printer, and set to work spattering them (and myself) with watered down acrylics in the backyard.

Why we love candid moments: a top 5 countdown with Mary Cyrus Photography

I think we're all in agreement that when you get your wedding photography back after the wedding, the most fun will be had looking at all the candid shots that you didn't know were being taken. The groups photos are lovely, but it's those little moments that make it all so much more memorable… and often hilarious. Grandma shaking it on the dance floor, the bouquet hitting the ceiling, surprise ceremony bloopers — you know what we're talking about! We asked our sponsor, Texas-based Mary Cyrus, to go on a little top five journey from her 2014 weddings to see which candid moments were her favorites.

Mustard yellow shoes for delicious wedding day

Mustard isn't necessarily the most obvious wedding shoe color choice… but its more muted color can be perfect for an autumn wedding, or for those of you going for a more jewel-toned feel. Mustard says you're aiming more on the sepia end of the wedding color spectrum.

That said, I'm going to toss in a few more generally yellow shoes as well. And one pair of platforms that take the "mustard" concept into a more literal, condiment-oriented direction.

We're everywhere!
