Date and location of wedding: Houdini Estate, Los Angeles, CA — May 20, 2017

Our offbeat wedding at a glance:

We wanted our wedding to be us. We aren't into religion or the typical traditions, and we wanted our wedding to reflect that. We picked a location that matched our personalities. As the entire estate was an homage to Harry Houdini, we also wanted to reflect magic elements in our day. We hired an amazing magician and had candles everywhere. We also support a local Husky rescue and wanted that to be included in our day. Our videographer sporting his very own GoPro was our husky, Vox!

Tell us about the ceremony:

The groomsmen and flower girls walked to the ceremony location to Matt and Kim's “Hey Now” which got everyone pumped up and allowed us to include a more upbeat couples song.

I walked down the aisle to The The's “This is the Day.” I love Dr. Martens and found a blue velvet pair to wear. We had a friend perform a personal and non-religious ceremony.

Tell us about your reception:

We are lucky in that our family owns a florist so our reception was covered in the most beautiful flowers. The details were wild. I know for a fact that flowers would have taken a back seat had we not been this lucky.

We also wanted to make sure that our food was something we actually like to eat, so we catered from our all-time favorite restaurant, Boneyard Bistro. We combined some light salads with BBQ and a seafood boil.

We had a beautiful cake/donut/memorial table. It was the hottest day of May topping over 90 at 4pm, so unfortunately one of the memorial cakes melted!

What was your most important lesson learned?

I learned to stay true to myself and have the oh-shit moments and then immediately let them go. It's not something I do well in my normal life, but somehow I mastered it for the wedding and it was so worth it.

I also knew I couldn't produce my vision on my own, so hiring the right wedding planner for me was KEY. I searched out someone I knew could handle a non-traditional wedding and she blew it out of the park.

  1. But can we details on her gorgeous hair tho??? (Also, I’ll take a to-go plate if there are left-overs. That food looks bomb!)
