Every once in awhile I run across an idea that I personally want to steal, as is the case today. Heather and John, instead of using traditional vows, decided to adapt Bilbo's birthday speech from The Lord of the Rings for their ceremony, including a perfectly-timed shout-out:

Instead of clear-cut vows, we did a modified reading of Bilbo's birthday speech from The Lord of the Rings, thanking our families for coming out and having our friends shout “Proudfeet” at the appropriate time.

To jog your memory if you aren't quite as obsessed as I am, here's an excerpt, ripe for adding in your own names:

Bilbo: “My dear Bagginses and Boffins, Tooks and Brandybucks, Grubbs, Chubbs, Hornblowers, Bolgers, Bracegirdles and Proudfoots.” [cheers]

Old Proudfoot Hobbit: “Proudfeet!”

Bilbo: “Alas, eleventy-one years is far too short a time to live among such excellent and admirable hobbits. I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.”

Also, this wedding is totally worth a second look for the many cute giant pup photos anyway. Go see.

Who's planning on injecting a little geekery into their ceremony? Tell us about it in the comments.

Comments on Proudfeet! Turning Bilbo’s birthday speech into geektacular vows

  1. Works well when your fiance’s last name is actually Proudfoot! His hobbit last name was the reason I talked to him in the first place!

  2. I’m a late comer to the Tolkien fandom so I admit I had to watch this clip to understand the reference: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iG6Uy5d7u0E

That said, I love the idea of acknowledging, by name, all the different families/groups the couple may have been a part of, even if the reference may go over many of our guests heads

I’ve always loved this Doc Brown quote from BTTF3 for the end of a ceremony: “Your future hasn’t been written yet. No one’s has. Your future is whatever you make it. So make it a good one, both of you.”

    • That is a wonderful idea!! I’ve always loved that quote- I might just steal it for my wedding!!
