Whether you're destined for the stoic Mr. Darcy or like me, lamented the passing of your favorite Col. Brandon (we miss you, Alan!), Jane Austen's characters forever changed many of our romantic sentiments for better or worse.

It is a truth universally acknowledged, though, that Jane Austen quotes (from her books or inspired by her from the movies!) are always ripe for plucking for lovely and old-fashioned swoon-y sentiment (as well as LOTS of awesome snark!). Let's pick the most romantic, clever, and snarky Jane Austen quotes for when we are all fools in love.

Jane Austen on love

“We are all fools in love” – Pride and Prejudice

“To be fond of dancing was a certain step towards falling in love.” – Pride and Prejudice

“The Very first moment I beheld him, my heart was irrevocably gone.” – Love and Friendship

“There is nothing I would not do for those who are really my friends. I have no notion of loving people by halves, it is not my nature.” – Northanger Abbey

“I must learn to be content with being happier than I deserve.” – Pride and Prejudice

“Oh, Lizzy! do anything rather than marry without affection.” – Pride and Prejudice

“There are as many forms of love as there are moments in time.” – Jane Austen

“If I have not spoken, it is because I am afraid I will awaken myself from this dream.” – Emma

“I am the happiest creature in the world. Perhaps other people have said so before, but not one with such justice. I am happier even than Jane; she only smiles, I laugh.” – Pride and Prejudice

“To you I shall say, as I have often said before, Do not be in a hurry, the right man will come at last.” – Jane Austen, Jane Austen's Letters

Cynical and funny Jane

“It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.” – Pride and Prejudice

“Selfishness must always be forgiven you know, because there is no hope of a cure.” – Mansfield Park

“Nobody minds having what is too good for them.” – Mansfield Park

Jane-Austen-19

Comments on Pledge your troth to these romantic (and snarky!) Jane Austen quotes

    • Once again, not a quote by Jane Austen, only from the 2005 Pride and Prejudice movie.

    • But that one is NOT by Jane Austen, it appears only in the 2005 Pride and Prejudice film.

  1. One of my personal favorites from Mansfield Park: “Let no one presume to give the feelings of a young woman on receiving the assurance of that affection of which she has scarcely allowed herself to entertain a hope.”

  2. Unfortunately, you have included at least 6 quotes, among those the very first and the last, which are NOT by Jane Austen, they come from adaptations of her works. Badly done!

    • Fair enough, I’ll add a note about that. Some fans of the movie may enjoy adding the movie quotes to their ceremony though, as inspired-by, so I won’t remove them. Appreciate the catch!
