World of Warcraft vows

These are the hands that protect each other in PVP, looking for a group, raids, and any other gaming adventure.

These are the hands that will work alongside yours as we build our future together.

These are the hands that will countless times wipe the tears from your eyes, tears of sorrow, joy, and irritation while waiting for rez-sickness to resolve.

These are the hands that will give you support and encouragement to chase down your dreams and destroy the Lich King.

These are the hands that will hold you tight as you struggle through difficult times, and cheer when you finally acquire Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker.

These are the hands that will offer you Mana and Health when needed, and Tank for you so that you can loot to your heart's content.

Doctor Who vows

You and I have traveled through time together. It’s been more than ten years since I first said yes to a date with you. It’s been more than five years since we moved in together, making a place for both of us that was truly a home, because it was where we lived TOGETHER. And now, it’s been almost a year since you put a ring on my finger and asked me, and I said yes.

Now, I want you to know that I will continue to travel through time with you. It doesn’t matter that we’re only moving in one direction: This is as much of an adventure to me as anything involving a Time Lord with a blue box. I will keep having adventures with you. I will walk this path with you, wherever it leads, as the road goes ever on. I will share the beauty and the joy I find along the way with you, and I will share your sorrows and help you to bear them. I will always, always, be your partner… and your companion. I love you.

Him: I vow to always sing you Soft Kitty when you are sick. But only when you are sick.
Her: I promise that if a strange man in a blue police box tries to take me away, I will insist that you tag along.
Him: I promise that you will always have my sword.
Her: And you will always have my bow.
(Chorus of nerds:) AND MY AXE!

Harry Potter vows

Mine:
Jason, today is just an ordinary day. The sun rose as it always does, and the sun will set the way it does every day. But today is also our wedding day. Today is the day that we publicly affirm all the promises we made to each other years ago. Today we embark on a brand new journey.

As a human, I can’t promise that our life will be perfect or that we’ll never fight. I know I will screw up, but I promise it won’t be on purpose. I can’t promise that our love will be the stuff that they write epic poems about, but I can promise that as long as we’re together on this earth, you’ll know exactly how much I love and respect you. I can’t swear that we’ll have a future full of mansions and fancy cars, but I can promise plenty of everyday adventures, I can promise that we’ll go to thousands of concerts, our fair share of geeky conventions, and you’ll always have someone to coop on Fable with. I promise to never be a boring adult, to always be your lover, companion, and friend. I promise to be your partner in parenthood and to always come to your aid when you need it. I’ll always be the Ginny to your Harry.

I have never wanted a Prince Charming to sweep me off my feet. I never needed the mystical happy ending — I just wanted to find someone with whom I could laugh and enjoy life. I found all that in you, and I can’t wait to grow old with you. I’m glad we don’t live in a world of happily ever afters, because with you and our friends, I get to enjoy plenty of happily ever here and nows. I love you, and I promise to never stop loving you, from this day, until the end of my days.

His:
Nitwit blubber oddment tweak.
I’ll try to keep these words short and sweet.
For the girl who has waited, has waited long enough.
You’re my companion when things get rough.
This is something that will never waiver.
And the odds will always be in our favor.
For it is plain as anyone could see.
We are simply meant to be.
Everyone here and everyone above.
Just like Northern Downpour, send their love.
There is no power in the ‘verse.
That can separate us, for better or for worse.
I know that everything will be fine.
You’ll never fail me at any time.
And after all our years and all our days,
my answer will be the same, 'always.'

Ghostbusters meets Sherlock vows

You are the Keymaster to my Gatekeeper,
the Watson to my Sherlock,
the peanut butter to my toaster waffle.

I choose you to be my husband today.
And I would choose you again tomorrow.
I will go on choosing you the day after,
and every day for the rest of our lives.
You are my once-in-a-lifetime.

I love that you are brilliant and talented and handsome and let me take me-sized bites of your food.
I love that you make me feel beautiful, even when I am in my garden gnome pajama pants.
I love that you hold and comfort me when I cry, even when I cry for no apparent reason.
I love that you make me laugh every day and love all of our inside jokes. You are so funny.
But most of all, I love the fact that you and I both love each other so much.

I promise to stand by you and to be the president of your fan club.
I promise to feed you when you are hungry or grumpy or forget to take care of yourself.
I promise to always treat you as my best friend and equal, to ask for help when I need it,
and offer help always.
I promise to remain by your side as we grow old, to decorate your walker, and clean the drool off your chin.
I promise to never let anything come between us, to fight for us,
to love you through good times and challenging times,
and to always maintain a sense of humor.

Being with you is like coming home.
You make me whole.
You make me better.
I love you.

Horror movie vows

Mine:
Not unlike this VHS copy of the Japanese horror classic, you’re old school — a trail-blazer, a true original, not to mention all about home video… also coincidentally very popular in Japan.
You instantly reached cult status for me, and I promise you’ll be the only one I watch over and over, long after the flashy sequels and reboots of our youth have faded into obscurity.
We may not always speak the same language, and sometimes you’re downright scary, but I’ll never switch you off, even if you’re freakin’ me out a little.
Through unexpected plot twists I’ll be there, by your side, until I am dead. Which will hopefully be far more than seven days from now.

His:
Not unlike the 2002 American re-make of The Ring, you stand out from others in your genre by being stronger and more effective than those that have come before you.
Every otherwise familiar moment is improved by your unique perspective and sense of style.
You’ve succeeded in being beloved by the masses, but despite your popularity and accessibility, there is substance and complexity beneath your surface.
I vow to cherish all the surprises in store for me and look forward to watching our story unfold. I intend to cherish your aesthetic long after future superior formats inevitably render you what others might consider obsolete.

Zombie vows

I, Bic, take, you, Bob to be my partner in life. I will always be honest, true, and a loyal friend to you. I promise to protect you during the zombie apocalypse and to save your life, if ever so much as an eyelash puts it in peril. These promises will hold through our best moments and our worst, whether we’ve won the lotto or live in a shack, and I will also occasionally share a monster with you, Bob, because I less-than-3 you.

I, Bob, take you, Bic to be my partner in life, in the zombie apocalypse and in anything else that may come our way. I promise to make your doctor appointments, to keep your social calendar active, and to be careful when I jump in. And most importantly, I vow to go crazy with you for no reason at all other than I heart you.

Greek mythology meets pirates vows

According to Greek Mythology, in Plato’s The Symposium, humans were originally created with four arms, four legs, and a head with two faces. Fearing their power, Zeus split them into two separate beings, condemning them to spend their lives in search of their other halves.

I am so blessed that I have found mine.

You’re the first person I think of when I wake up. You’re the last person I think of when I go to sleep. You’re the one that haunts my dreams at night. You kiss my scars and tell me that I am beautiful. I am so lucky that someday I will have a grave next to yours.

I vow to love you when it’s easy and love you more when it’s not. I vow to stand by your side for our journey through life. Never behind, never in front, but right next to you. I vow to keep pushing myself and you to be the best we can be.

I wear black every day of my life. I have worn solid white today to signify the importance of this marriage and our love. I never thought I would find someone as wonderfully weird as I am. I am blessed to have found my match, my counterpart, my pirate, my love. I love you today and always.

Even more Tolkien vows

Lord of the Rings vows via @offbeatbride
Photos by Rose Wheat Photography

Instead of clear-cut vows, Heather and John did a modified reading of Bilbo's birthday speech from The Lord of the Rings. To jog your memory if you aren't quite as obsessed as I am, here's an excerpt, ripe for adding in your own names:

Bilbo: "My dear Bagginses and Boffins, Tooks and Brandybucks, Grubbs, Chubbs, Hornblowers, Bolgers, Bracegirdles and Proudfoots." [cheers] Old Proudfoot Hobbit: "Proudfeet!"

Bilbo: "Alas, eleventy-one years is far too short a time to live among such excellent and admirable hobbits. I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve."

A sneaky Parks and Rec reference

I promise to talk and to listen.
I promise to stand by you and challenge you.
I promise to give and to be present.
I promise to give you half the cream cheese I would want on a bagel.
I promise to under jelly your sandwiches but over toast them.
But most of all I promise to work on this, on us. I promise to try. I promise to choose you and us and our family every day. I promise to set aside my pride and work on a partnership, filled with two people.
I promise to be great to you.
I love you, and I like you.

  1. Gosh, no Game of Thrones themed wedding vows? I can't imagine why…

    😉

    9 agree
  2. Thank you for this article! I am getting married in my family church.. but Im definitely borrowing some of these quotes for the reception. 🙂 Only a couple of weeks left!

  3. We're in the process of writing our ceremony right now (wedding is Sunday the 27th!). I am thinking we should include that LOTR bit, "I promise you will always have my sword," "And you shall always have my bow." Because it would be completely appropriate. Not only are we having a fantasy/LOTR/renaissance themed wedding, I shoot competitive recurve archery, and my fiance is rather capable with a sword (or bokken, used in kendo)! So it would totally fit us! ^_^

    • do you have any suggestions for quotes or format for the ceremony? I am also doing a fantasy/LOTR/renaissance themed wedding on May 13. I am just pretty stumped from trying to do the ceremony script from scratch. I haven't really found much available on scripts on the internet.

      1 agrees
  4. Our vows, taken from "The Witcher" novel series:

    Thus do I take you
    to have and to hold
for the most wondrous and terrible of times
for the best and the worst of times
    by day and by night
    in sickness and in health.
For I love you with all of my heart
and swear to love you eternally,
    Until death do us part.

…close enough to the vows my parents/other traditional people make for everyone to be comfy, with a geeky "easter egg" for those who enjoy the geeky things we do.

  5. I had intended to include a bit from the Symposium in my vows, as well as Ruth 1:16-17 and Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. I love the Parks & Rec inclusion!

  6. My vows are…
Today we stand here in front of God and those we love to commit ourselves to each other. I promise you will never be alone. I promise that you will never doubt that you are loved and that you are cherished. I promise that I will always have your six. I will stand by your side when you face your greatest battles. I will be the companion to your hero, the Shepard to your Garrus, the Padme to your Anakin. You have bewitched me body and soul, and I love you. I love you. I love you. I wish never to be parted from you this day on.

  7. I'm looking for some good Link and Zelda vows (and a cake topper too?). Any suggestions please?
