It's getting close to one of our favorite holidays, Star Wars Day! Stock up on your geeky quotes, get your lightsabers ready, and use The Force. May the fourth be with you!

The Offbeat Bride: Gemma, Retail Advisor

Her offbeat partner: Steve, Software Engineer

Date and location of wedding: Hawkesyard Hall, Rugeley, Staffordshire — May 18, 2013

Our offbeat wedding at a glance: After meeting at university, our relationship blossomed via an online Star Wars game. Naturally, when deciding on a theme for the wedding, we just had to include Star Wars! We didn't want it to be too nerdy, so we opted to go down the country house route but with some little Star Wars twists, just to keep the guests interested.

Our cake knife was made from a lightsaber hilt I ordered from America, however it was quite a task to attach it to a knife blade. That is where my Uncle Andrew (aka Darth Vader) came to the rescue and attached it with some handy copper work. Both Steve and I listed ourselves as “Jedis” on the last census in the UK, so of course we needed a Jedi weapon!

The Jedi Order logo was used throughout, from stationery to the wax seal (homemade from a badge and a knight chess piece), to a symbol in the headpiece, and on the candles.

Star Wars I-Spy

We had a Star Wars I-Spy game on the tables for the guests to find all the Star Wars details and decor. We had Star Wars mints, cuddly toys, and little details all over the place.

Ceremony

Tell us about the ceremony:
My brother gave me away, and this was really emotional for me. At the front of the ceremony, our initials hung from the backs of two chairs in gypsophila (baby's breath). Steve's brother Michael read the following:

Ceremony“Wedding Day” by Robert Palmer:

The day of your wedding is a time to reflect
On the things you can hope for
And the things to expect
You could hope for great riches
Huge bundles of cash
But then lose it all
In a stock market crash
Or you could hope for
A life of great ease
With the time and the money
To do as you please
But its better to hope for
The good things in life
Like a long happy life
As husband and wife
Like the smile and the kiss
As you walk through the door
And the baby that wakes you at quarter to 4
And a life of variety
With sunshine and rain
And Frosties for breakfast instead of champagne
Expect times of anger
The occasional huff
Because no one annoys you
Like the one that you love
But dont look for problems
That the future may bring
Just to love and be loved
Is a wonderful thing
Lifes not all plain sailing
Not always a ball
But I know you'll be happy
Because love conquers all

We then had the main vows part where we exchanged rings made from tungsten carbide.

A second reading was then made by our best friend David North , a reading taken from the Sci-Fi series Babylon 5:
“Declaration of Principles” – Babylon 5:

The Universe speaks in many languages, but only one voice.
The language is not Human, Klingon, Huttese or Gallifreyan.

It speaks in the language of hope. It speaks in the language of trust.
It speaks in the language of strength, and the language of compassion.
It is the language of the heart and the language of the soul.
But always it is the same voice.

It is the voice of our ancestors speaking through us.
And the voice of our inheritors waiting to be born.
It is the small, still voice that says we are One.

No matter the blood, no matter the skin,
No matter the world, no matter the star,
We are One.
No matter the pain, no matter the darkness,
No matter the loss, no matter the fear.
We are One.

Here, gathered together in common cause
We agree to recognize this singular truth and this singular rule:
That we must be kind to one another.

Because each voice enriches us and ennobles us,
And each voice lost diminishes us.
We are the voice of the universe, the soul of creation,
And the fire that will light the way to your future together.

Directing to dance floor

My funniest moment:
It has to be when Darth Vader turned up and escorted us both to the dance floor for our first dance! We hadn't planned it and it was the funniest and biggest moment. Darth Vader (my uncle) is not the tallest of fellas, so we knew it wasn't the real one! 😉

Blessing the first dance

Confetti at ceremony

Another hilarious moment involved the confetti. I purchased some real flower petal confetti and got some little organza bags for them. I then thought it would be lovely to add some “fairy dust,” so I added some glitter. It looked fantastic, but the glitter stuck like glue to skin! Could we wipe it off? NOPE! So we are full of intergalactic sparkle in the wedding photos.

Awaiting group photo!
