Something old, new, borrowed and skimpy: Would you get married in a swimsuit?

Posted by

Ariel was quoted in an Today.com article yesterday about a new trend of bridal swimsuits:

Ariel Meadow Stallings, founder of the website Offbeat Bride (tagline: “Altar your thinking”), said she's never seen a wedding where the bride sported a swimsuit — but she wouldn't rule it out if that was what a woman truly wanted to wear.cute retro swimsuit“I absolutely know that brides do think a lot about swimwear because some of them are planning honeymoons to tropical destinations,” said Stallings, author of “Offbeat Bride: Creative Alternatives for Independent Brides.” “In honeymoon swimwear, I've noticed the trend toward retro-style swimsuits, which are more modest. They're flattering and feel timeless and look great on you no matter your age.”

Stallings pointed out that wedding-dress shopping can be a stressful experience for many women as they struggle to find flattering dresses in their price range. Adding the pressure of swimsuit shopping on top of that, she said, could be too much to take.

“It's hard enough to find a swimsuit that fits right, let alone trying to make it your wedding dress,” Stallings said.

Also, we think it's worth noting that Megan totally wore a swimsuit under her wedding dress.

So tell us: who's getting married in a swimsuit? And then the next question is… which swimsuit!?

  1. Most beach weddings are a mini-vacation, and I’d imagine just about every beach bride buys a new swimsuit to debut. I think a lot of people shy away from white swimsuits because of the wet t-shirt effect…
Anyway, I just imagine a bride in the second swimsuit with a big flowy skirt or palazzo pants on over it. The bride says “I do”, then rips off the cover-up and runs into the ocean.

    • I know your comment is a bit of an aside, but holy crapola those pics are awesome.

  2. My mom’s cousin got married wearing only a white bikini so I can tell you it’s been done before for sure.

Also, I am a HUGE fan of retro swimsuits and the proud owner of a lavender Kimchi Blue retro one-piece from Urban Outfitters.

    • Whoa, hold on a sec. This is an old post, but I just have to ask. Is the guy with the ponytail named Jon Moran? If that is him, we were friends in high school!

Congrats on the wedding pool party, btw!

    • Me too! It’s pretty much the best, most comfortable and flattering swimsuit ever.

    • Me too! I love it so much. And I have serious body image issues and usually loathe bathing suits. When that one arrived and I put it on, I didn’t want to ever take it off.

    • I totally do, too. I call it “My Forever Swimsuit.” I mean, not that it’ll last forever, but it’s a style that looks good on every woman at every age. It’s the only swimsuit I’ve ever felt truly comfortable in, and I intend to wear the style until I die.

Megan has it too. She’s got great stories.

  3. I would love to try getting married in a swimsuit. I want my wedding to be memorable and would love to try that 🙂

  4. Well, one of the synagogues we looked into as a venue actually had a pool, as it also had a school in the same building. I definitely had visions of a post-wedding pool party in the middle of January and it sounded really freakin’ awesome! And I would have needed a new swimsuit for that because there was no way I was jumping into a pool in my ceremony dress or my reception dress and all of my current suits are ill-fitting and ugly.

But alas, we went with a different venue that was a better fit for our needs. Our wedding was amazing, but there was no pool party.

  5. How funny that you post this today. Just last week, saw this blog post on RockNRoll Bride with an AWESOME custom-made wedding swimsuit (and zip-lining down to the aisle to boot)

  6. When my dad married my stepmom, we were all wearing swimsuits. We were at the beach on vacation (the parents, me and my two stepsiblings), so we went to the courthouse with suits under clothes, they got hitched, and then we spent the rest of the day at a water park as a new family 🙂
