Play a “stand up/sit down” game at your wedding reception

Stand-up sit-down game at a wedding on @offbeatbride

Jamie and Evan had planned a big outdoor game-fest, but some nasty, rainy weather pushed them indoors. The good thing was that they had an indoor elimination game planned with a really special prize:

We asked everyone to stand up at their seat, and then we eliminated people with criteria like, “If you have on white socks, sit down.” or “If you cannot roll your tongue, sit down.” Some of these were goofy, such as “If the day of the month in which you were born is a prime number, sit down. If you had to ask what a prime number is, sit down.” A couple brought people back like, “If you know how to make pie crust from scratch, stand back up.” And some were deliberate digs like, “If you were born in Lewiston, Maine, sit down” which eliminated most of Evan's French-Canadian family. The prize for both this game and the musical chairs was a jar of my dad's homemade spaghetti sauce, so the competition was fierce.

Make this idea your own by asking a talented friend to cook or make something rad that will get everyone in a winning mood, write up your questions, and you're set. If you're more into trivia, check out Kate and Nate's shoe game. And for something even wilder, check out Monika and Alex's ceremony challenge.

  1. This seems like a really fabulous way to break some ice, too, if your wedding might include some awkward tensions within your family (which mine certainly will).

  2. This sounds like so much fun!! I might have to incorporate this into my reception!

  3. Thank you so much for the game idea, I will definitely plan it for my friends’ bridal shower!
