Geek Girl Con: See you this weekend!

By on Oct. 7th

After months of preparation, this is the weekend I have been waiting for! A solid chunk of my Offbeat Empire staffers are flying in from all over the country today (Superman, Caroline, Little Red Lupine, Tribe mods and K-Redd: you'll be missed!) so that we can all dork out hard at Geek Girl Con this weekend. Our panel, "Rocking the Geek Niche," is on Sunday at noon in the Lopez room, and features all managing editors, myself, and my long-suffering enigmatic web developer. After the panel, I'll be signing copies of my book at the U Bookstore booth in the vendor area, while Empire staffers bump chests and shout BOOYAHHHH! like 'roided out athletes.

Then there's that whole little thing with the Offbeat Empire reception that's happening tonight at Urban Light Studios. YOU GUYS. I don't even know what to say about it! Other than book readings (which don't quite count) this is the first Event with a capitol E that I've ever done, and thanks to Kelli from Shindig Events, it's been a freaking blast.

Part of the fun of this event is that it's giving me the excuse to work with some of my favorite local wedding vendor-types, from the incredibly accommodating ladies at Urban Light Studios to the bad-ass eyeball of Jonas Seaman to Shooby Doo and The Chic Cupcake and Robot In Bloom and the hottest bedimpled videographer ever and holy shit you guyyyys. They're all amaze-balls and make me want to throw parties every weekend so we can all be fwiends and hang out together all the time looking at spreadsheets and stuff.

And the reception entertainment?! OMG WUT. Nerdy Burlesque? My chaps-wearing friend Shon who I call DJ No Sleeves? Baby Van Beezly? And don't even get me started on the freaking gift bags, with treats from Little Things, Bubble Genius, ZOMGSmells, and This Charming Candy. The RSVP list at this point is way past capacity (if you didn't RSVP, I'm afraid it's too late :( ), but I had this moment of being like "Maybe no one will show up so that I can keep all these gift bags for myself MWAHAHA!"

But really, for me this weekend is all about having a big chunk of my remote-working staff in one place and showing them how much I appreciate them. I'm trying to go all out, with custom fascinators for each of them from Topsy Turvy, and everyone getting their hairs did by the magicians at Vain, and transportation to the party in a vehicle called (wait for it!) Barbie's Dream Hearse. See, while the Geek Girl Con will be super fun, what I'm most excited about is showing my appreciation to the Geeky Girls who keep the Empire online — yeah, that means my staff, but it also means YOU ALL.

Can't wait to meet some of you this weekend! SQUEEEEE!
