Aw yeah, it's Halloween week! Get ready for a big helping of tricks and treats with your romance. Today we've got glittery skulls, plush bouquets, and some cake demolition.

Thrilled to be here…

The offbeat bride: Kimberly, Musician and Library Technologist

Her offbeat partner: Brett, Writer and Financial Advisor

Date and location of wedding: Chicago Marriott O'Hare — October 29, 2010

What made our wedding offbeat: As part of our Halloween-themed decor, we included a Corpse Bride wedding cake, a Monster Book of Monsters groom's cake, a dessert table filled with Halloween-themed baked goods, Victorian-style table cloths, purple toasting goblets, giant glitter pumpkins, skulls, and masquerade masks.

Sparkle Skull Bride and Groom

Wedding Masquerade

Our entrance music was the theme to Buffy the Vampire Slayer and our cake cutting music was the theme to Dexter.

Flubber Bridal Party

Flubb Love

My bridesmaids and I posed in front of my mother's house alongside a giant inflatable Frankenstein holding cuddly, green, smiling Flubbers in place of bouquets.

Nikko Room Cocktail Hour

Tell us about the ceremony: The ceremony was the most traditional part of the evening. The groom's father is an ordained minister and was our officiant. We chose not to do a church wedding, so it took place within the hotel, which made the event a little easier on our guests since no one had to do any traveling from a church to a venue.

My brother and my cousin both read poems selected by us. One of the poems was a Pablo Neruda one entitled “Perhaps not to be is to be without your being.” The music selection was also traditional.

Bridal Shoes and Gown

Our biggest challenge: Walking gracefully in a long gown while wearing high heels and walking up an elevated floor for the ceremony without looking awkward.

The happy couple…

My favorite moment: The ceremony, of course, because that's why we were there. And I also loved when the hubby and I finally got to sit down to dinner and just talk to each other after not seeing each other for a few days.

Finally, I relished the moment I was able to slip into gym shoes and dance, because as much fun as my Iron Fist Skull-themed heels were, I am generally not that graceful. Finally, the speeches given by our Maid of Honor and Best Man were really sweet.

Corpse Cake Cutting

My funniest moment: When attempting to cut the cake, we had not realized that there was a cardboard divider between the levels of the cake. So after a moment or two of wrestling with the cake I finally pulled out what would most accurately be described as a “chunk” that in no way resembled a complete slice.

Aside from that, watching my groom and his college buddies getting a little too excited on the dance floor when Lady Gaga and Ke$ha started to play, since they often pride themselves on their love of heavy metal music.

Reception Tables

Look ma!

My advice for offbeat brides: Everyone is going to have opinions. Keep an open mind when others voice their thoughts, but stick to your guns when you feel strongly about something. And on the day, go with the flow, because stressing out is no fun and it does no good to worry.

Oh no…
