It's the week before Halloween and you know what that means… it's time for HALLOWEEN WEEK on Offbeat Bride! Whoo hoo! I love to geek out over theme weeks and Halloween week is one of my favorites — spooky decor, costumed guests, epic dresses and lots of candy! Let's kick it off with Emma and Gary's gothic Halloween wedding in a castle in Northern Ireland. -Megs
The offbeat bride: Emma (OBT Member)
Her offbeat partner: Gary
Location & date of wedding: Belfast Castle, Belfast, Northern Ireland — October 31, 2009
What made our wedding offbeat: Since it was on Halloween and on a Saturday, we had a Halloween party in the evening. The tables were all named after horror films. We asked people to come dressed in dark clothes and to bring costumes for the halloween party that night. I hunted down a DJ that was more than willing to play our metal and Halloween songs.
We tried to keep costs down. We saved on things that weren't that important to us and splashed out on the venue, food, and photography. Gary made buttonholes from skeleton leaves and buttons. I bought silk flower bouquets from charity shops and added buttons and two photos of my late grandmothers. It was important to me to have them there.
Plus we had a sweets table which was a big hit with the adults!
Our biggest challenge: When we first told our family and friends our plans, we were met by some strange looks. As time progressed, (two years planning!) they seemed to warm to our ideas. After our wedding, most people have expressed how much they enjoyed it being a change from the traditional.
My favorite moment: While walking down the staircase to our ceremony room with my dad, I could not see my soon to be husband through all the people standing out on the aisle taking photos with grinning faces. I can still see those smiles. My advice for offbeat brides: Be yourselves and have what is important to you, sometimes others will not see your visions but help them to understand its importance to you. I found out that family and friends like to help out with things, and its nice for them to feel included. I think it makes it more special. This does include your fiance too!
