Second, today I was shopping for a friend who's having a baby soon, and saw this awesome book that looks like you could have written it, called "From the Hips: A Comprehensive, Open-Minded, Uncensored, Totally Honest Guide to Pregnancy, Birth, and Becoming a Parent". I flipped through it and decided I have to get it if and when I ever get knocked up.

Also, I always give pregnant people I know a book by Anne Lamott called "Operating Instructions" and I think you'd really like it, too.

Leave it to me to have to leave book recommendations in my comment. Anyway, congrats again!

Secondly, I have but three words for you; AWESOME PREGNANT SEX!
I have a two year old and whilst she wasn't planned, me and my hubby to be love her so much and we're so proud of her. The thing about children is they bring pain, strife, sleepless nights, emotional hell, financial turmoil and turn your house into a bomb site… But you'll love every single minute.

Congratulations!! I just love kids, and I'm sure your little one will be loved. The best thing about kids from off beat relationships is they are usually raised by a tribe of loving, bad-ass non-related aunts and uncles!

You should read Operating Instructions… it's a book about Anne Lamott's first year of being a mother. She of Bird by Bird fame. It's really good.

So happy for you!! We have a 2 year old boy and he fills every day with more happiness than I ever thought possible.
Enjoy every second of your wonderful pregnancy, it's an amazing process your body is going through and it will be over very quickly. I still miss my bump and feel faint envy every time I see a pregnant woman. Damn it I'm broody again!!!!

Ros: OH GOD YES. I am already finding this and being at times quite upset by it.

Most recently it's about sleep deprivation … everyone seems to think we have no idea that babies cut into your sleep. Not only do we have an idea, I've been living in fear of it so much that I've skipped the pregnancy and birth books and gone straight to the sleeping baby books. I'm already making plans with my mom to help us with "night nannying" so we can solid nights of rest every once and a while. For godsake I've had conversations with my therapist about sleep dep terrors!

…And yet still, when I tell people that sleep dep is my biggest parenting fear, they cackle and say OH YOU HAVE NO IDEA. It's like telling someone who's afraid of flying about that plane crash that happened last week. I'M ALREADY TERRIFIED, I had to tell a friend last night. PLEASE FOR THE SAKE OF MY SANITY STOP IT WITH THE FEAR MONGERING.

Congratulations! I've been in the mama club for years, and the mister is trying to get me to renew my membership – a cool tribe might be a little nudge Books… I LOVE anything by Ina May Gaskin. Her books are so empowering, informative w/o scaring the holy hell out of you, and so positive on all aspects of baby-having and babies in general. I swear I ovulate every time I read them. If anyone gives you a copy of What to Expect While You're Expecting, BURN IT!!! lol

Congrats Ariel! I see there are a number of knocked up OBT, and I'm going to add my name to the list. I'm 27 weeks, and have quite the squirmy kid in there. It's been a lot of years rolled into 1-married, bought a house, and now preggers. BTW-the second trimester is great.

Ariel, don't worry about sleep dev. It's for a short period and it'll pass. If you're the type of person that doesn't care if the house falls apart around you it won't matter, you just sleep when you can.
If he woke between 12 and 5am I used to take my little boy into bed with me, feed him a little and he'd fall asleep with my breathing. I know a lot of people think that's a big no-no but it worked wonderfully for us and he turned out a very independant little fella. You do whatever works for you and your family. Just remember there's a heap of books out there, but no instruction manuel.

I know I'm a little late in my congratulations, but hey – I was off on my honeymoon killing wildlife by accident, what can I say?

I know that I don't *really* know you, but I definitely feel like I know your online persona, and I'm so excited for you! How wonderful, congratulations to you and Andreas both!!!

Congrats! I have a 7 and 10 year old, so I've done things a bit backwards! I hope to get knocked up again in the fall! I'm very impressed by all the "Hippie moms" recommending the homebirth, breastfeeding, co-sleeping, etc. I second all of that! There are great groups on CafeMom for until you get your OffBeat Mama site going Remember the phrase "Co-sleep is you want sleep!"

I just found out I was pregnant Monday, and here I am looking for different styles of birth announcements, thinking "I wish there was an offbeatmom.com or offbeatpregnant.com", and low and behold I found this news! Congrats again and it would be wonderful if one of those other sites showed up. There's a lot of interest, for sure!

Don't trouble trouble until trouble troubles you. If you have a few (2 maybe) months to stay home with your baby, just sleep when your baby sleeps and you will be just fine, that is how my best friend survived her first few months and her baby was sleeping through the night remarkably early. (maybe this is the co-sleeping thing..idk I dont have a baby yet O.o)

That being said, I wouldn't be so worried, every baby is different and every mama is different. I am definitely a fan of telling people to shut the hell up (especially if you are already so stressed about one thing).

Also, do you have a midwife or an Ob? I am 100% a fan of midwifes and home-births. So much so that I am planning to BE a midwife as my career. (in like 10 years of schooling…lol). Seattle is a wonderful place for offbeat mamas because there are many midwifes, both Nurse-midwifes and direct-entry midwifes to choose from.

You are going to love having kids though, you are a very nurturing person (clear by how you run your tribe). If you do get an offbeatmama.com, you know I will be right there (even though Im still unmarried and still childless).

p.s. this post is a beautiful example of why you needed a new commenting system. I love it and think it works beautifully (especially because I use Firefox).
