Calla, we mostly stuck with the fake meat but skipped it for somethings – had a tofu + vegie soup instead of a mock shark fin, didn't put any mock meat in the noodle or rice dishes, and skipped the mock meat for the pick pick. but we had mock fish, kapitan, and a couple of other things.

I was happy to stumble upon your vegan 8 course Chinese wedding banquet story. I am in the process of planning the same thing, but mine will be at a vegetarian Chinese restaurant; so, it won't be as much of a challenge. I just had a question about how closely you tried to stick to a "traditional banquet." I don't care much for fake meat, but don't know how I feel about straying completely from the formula. What did you guys do?

Sagekelli, we just had dishes that were explicitly 'gluten-free' and explicitly 'not suitable,' and they were all served as individual dishes brought to the tables. if you're having a buffet sort of thing, i would definitely segregate them (we did the segregation in the kitchen). you can do it!

I recently found out I have celiac disease and if I get contaminated with gluten I act drunk (in a very bad way) for about 10days, esp now that I have it out of my system and my body has started healing. Gluten free is more than twice as expensive sometimes and I thought about having a GF table separate from other food. I'm just afraid of cross-contamination…its a sure fire way to put me out of commission in an hour flat. Did you have to deal with this issue? Or can you handle some gluten? I could use advice. But I'm excited to see you were able to feed everyone even with dietary "restrictions", that means it is possible! thanks for the inspiration!

Hey Trish! It was super important to me that we do some Malaysian stuff on the day, because my family is Chinese-Malaysian. Plus, nonya food is the best.

I did talk about the food on my food blog, it was great! ) GF and vegan was a bit of a challenge but an important one and I'm glad it went mostly okay.

The banning of black was a great idea, I recommend it to everyone.
