Annalise’s big, fat, vintage, native-american, Dia de los Muertos wedding

The offbeat bride: Annalise, Makeup Artist

Her offbeat partner: Adam, Carpenter

Location & date of wedding: Minneapolis, MN, November 3, 2007

What made our wedding offbeat: People loved to remark that our wedding was “our big, fat, vintage, native-american, Dia de los Muertos wedding.”

Quilt ceremonyWe got married in a Native American church, using the traditions such as smudging, a water ceremony, and a quilt ceremony with our elders, and my husband spent some time in the teepee with our elders before the ceremony.

We also managed to fit it in with our favorite holiday, Dia de los Muertos, and my love of all things vintage into it.

sugar skullsWe had a live band, a Mexican food buffet, cupcakes in five flavors, and we rented a local VFW and decor was bare bones. And because no one REALLY wants a tulle-wrapped sack of jordan almonds, our favors were sugar skulls, which we made ourselves with over 100 lbs. of sugar and frosting and Lady of Guadalupe candles. It was completely true to the spirit of Dia de los Muertos, even in doing a mariachi cover song for our first dance.

holding handsOur biggest challenge: I don’t know that we had one challenge that would stick out as being the biggest. I think that overall, it was just getting people to listen to us about what we were doing. His family is heavy on the traditional side, and my family knows that I only march to my own drum. Yet, people still gave us a hard time about not making our wedding more fancy, traditional or materialistic. We tried to remember that the goal of the weekend was to emerge married. And we did. :)

My favorite moment: There are three moments that stick out in my mind:

The first was when Adam and I were each on the corner of the brick wall, waiting to see one another for the first time. We were holding hands, waiting for the moment, and he spontaneously pulled my hand up and kissed it. Just as he did, the cathedral bells across the street started ringing.

The second was hearing our vows. We wrote them ourselves. Seeing him be moved by my words and feeling moved by his was something I’ll never forget.

Lastly, it was hearing four of our church elders offer prayers to the four directions in our honor. They are two couples we hope to emulate in our marriage. Hearing their words of wisdom and their love for us, in the place of so many family members moved us both greatly.

Don’t TRY to make your wedding different. Just go with what suits you both, and what is personal for you.

My offbeat advice: So many people forget that marriage is a privilege, and not a right. As such, they get caught up in the details of “bigger” and “better” and “different” to the point that “offbeat” nowadays is almost anything traditional. Don’t TRY to make your wedding different. Don’t TRY to be creative. Just go with what suits you both, and what is personal for you. The difference will come out tenfold if you do not try too hard.

Don’t get caught up in a theme to the point that every detail has to match.

Stick to your guns. At first I was polite and when met with criticism I would reply, “That’s a great idea, I’ll keep that in mind”, so as not to commit to anything. It worked. And when people didn’t like it, I remembered that it was my wedding, not theirs and I politely reminded them of that.

Enough talk — show me the wedding porn: Gorgeous photos of a wedding full of meaning.

Congratulations, your wedding sounds amazing! It’s great that you were able to combine all these elements which were meaningful to the two of you (Dia de Los Muertos was an especially nifty touch). Also, you both look gorgeous - I love your Madonna piercing.

The dress, the brick wall moment, the description…it’s all beautiful. I think that’s the sweetest first look moment I’ve ever read.

    Kim:

I was actually going for that! I knew what I wanted, and I couldn’t find it anywhere. I wanted a dress like Audrey’s in the movie “Funny Face”, with a couple of modifications. I even made an appointment with a dressmaker, when I found my dress. It’s a Lazaro BM dress and it happened to come in Ivory. Best of all, it was very affordable, needed no alterations, and had all the modifications I wanted!

Beautiful, sweet pictures. I lovelovelove your dress! Is it custom made? I also love the Dia de los muertos idea. I don’t know if you had a mariachi band, but I have always thought mariachi music was some of the most romantic and joyful music in the world.

Unfortunately a mariachi band was not in the budget (on top of the band who played the reception), but our first dance was to “You Belong to My Heart” as performed by the Old 97’s. We’re both big time dancers, so it was wonderful to move around the dance floor, spin, and have a good time.

Thanks, Keri! I ordered it from netbride.com. It’s an Erica Koessler veil. I was a little sticker shocked with the $110 price tag (half the cost of my dress!), but I am not a good DIY-er in the sewing dept. Knitting? Yes. Veils? Not so much. Netbride gave me the best price. I was told about three months, and I got it in two weeks.

The wedding porn has to stop - how am I supposed to steal *all* of these fantastic ideas?? :)

We’ve been considering doing photos prior to the ceremony (sun sets early in Nov, and I love the idea of an evening wedding). Couldn’t figure out how to do something fun prior to seeing each other….the brick wall photo is simply amazing, I absolutely love it. And I’m stealing your make-up. :)

Your style is impeccable! I loved looking at your photos. I too am getting married at the Mpls Sculpture Garden this summer. You are a makeup artist, which explains your kick-ass makeup. But I am not so skilled myself. Do you have any recommendations for makeup artists in the Twin Cities? How about hairstylists? I want to go for a retro-modern look sort of like yours, so any recommendations would be super appreciated. Thanks, and congrats on tying the knot!

Looks awesome! We actually are also planning a Dia de Los Muertos themed wedding for Nov. 1st. It has been a challenge with us as well, because our families don’t quite get it. They think it sounds morbid. But, we both love it and can’t wait. I’m sure they’ll get it when they see it. Also, I love your dress. Congrats on your marriage!
