Hey, I'm Ariel, author of the book Offbeat Bride: Taffeta-Free Alternatives for Independent Brides. This blog is just the tip of the offbeat iceberg — for the whole story you'll need the book, which is half memoir, half tipster handbook. I also blog at Electrolicious.
You're reading a page from the offbeatbride.com archives. You can read the
alternative wedding blog and access all webpage features on the

I understand the avoidance of diamonds because of where they can come from, but there ARE other places diamonds come from.

I resent being pressured by all the ads and the magazines and the wedding industrial complex. He ended up finding me a lovely antique sapphire ring, and it was really cool to research and learn that sappires were a traditional engagement ring choice long before diamonds became the thing to have as a result of heavy De Beers advertising in the 1930s.
